Sorry Dude: Seahawks Pass on Signing Colin Kaepernick

At this point it may be wise for Colin Kaepernick to start thinking about a career change.

The Seattle Seahawks have announced that they would pass on signing the radical social justice warrior.

The controversial former San Francisco 49ers quarterback now appears to have run out options as far as an NFL job goes.

The Seahawks seemed to be the perfect landing spot for Kaepernick. Seattle is an extremely liberal city, the Seahawks were in need of a decent backup to Russell Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll was receptive to the idea.

Until he wasn’t.

NBC Sports is reporting “Carroll on Kaepernick: We’re not doing anything at this time”:

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday that he believes quarterback Colin Kaepernick is “a starter in this league,” but he isn’t going to be a backup in Seattle at the moment.

Kaepernick visited with the Seahawks recently in the first sign of possible interest in his services since Kaepernick became a free agent earlier this year. Carroll said it was a “very productive” meeting and that “the doors are always open to opportunities,” but that the Seahawks are standing pat at the backup quarterback position for the time being.

“Colin’s been a fantastic football player and he’s going to continue to be,” Carroll said. “At this time, we didn’t do anything with it. We know where he is, who he is and we had a chance to understand him much more so. He’s a starter in this league and I can’t imagine somebody won’t give him a chance to play.”

It’s starting to look grim for Kaepernick who has been elevated to martyrdom by the left over his ongoing inability to get another NFL gig and the rejection by Carroll and the Seahawks will surely lead to much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

You can hardly blame Pete Carroll for not wanting to deal with the inevitable distraction that the signing of a polarizing political figure like Kaepernick would bring.

He already has enough problems in his locker room with disgruntled players including star cornerback Richard Sherman.

A blockbuster ESPN Magazine story claims that Sherman has lingering hostility over what was the most boneheaded play in Super Bowl history.

With a Super Bowl win a virtual lock and the Seahawks having the ball on the one yard line with the best short yardage back in football, Carroll dialed up a play that will forever live in infamy. Rather than run the surly “Beast Mode” wrecking ball Marshawn Lynch for the winning score, Carroll called a pass play right into the teeth of the Patriots defense.

It was intercepted. Game over, Patriots win. Stick a fork in the ass of the Seattle dynasty.

Compounding the idiotic play calling was Wilson’s inability to come through in the clutch with that one throw that essentially cost the Seahawks their chance to repeat as champions. Some have speculated that Wilson would have been a more fan friendly choice as the MVP than the ill-tempered and unpredictable Lynch who may have alienated millions if he went off during the postgame celebration.

Whatever the reason for the botched call, it is still an issue with Sherman who was the subject of trade rumors this spring.

If the hardest thing in football is to manage the celebrity that attends a Super Bowl win, the next-hardest thing is to forget a catastrophic Super Bowl loss. Something complicated and vital to the chemistry of a great team was broken on that interception. According to interviews with numerous current and former Seahawks players, coaches and staffers, few have taken it harder than Richard Sherman. He has told teammates and friends that he believes the Seahawks should have won multiple Super Bowls by now. And with just one trophy and the window closing fast, he has placed responsibility for that failing on the two faces of the franchise: Wilson and Carroll. Sherman, who like Wilson declined comment for this story, thinks Carroll hasn’t held Wilson or many young Seahawks to the defense’s championship standard. He’s been disillusioned not only by that single play more than two years earlier but also by his coach’s and quarterback’s response to it.

Sherman’s lingering bitterness over that one critical play is likely to also exist with other members of what was a bone-crushing defense that could have backstopped the team to multiple titles.

The introduction of Kaepernick into that situation could have led to a split in the team and fractured locker room given Sherman’s influence as well as the inconsistency of the coach’s pet Wilson.

Pete Carroll made the only choice that he really could and now Kaepernick will sit and wait while those who idolize him stew.

There is always the Canadian Football League.
