What could go wrong? Both Arizona Senators go Anti-Trump

Arizona, like all U.S. states, has two Senators and both of them have decided that 2018 and 2020 will go better for them if they reject President Donald Trump. They will be just as wrong as the anti-Trumpers were in 2016.

The thinking in the Republican Party just seven months after taking the White House for the first time in 8 years is difficult to fathom. The establishment GOP seems to be crafting a shadow campaign against Trump.  Offering to lead the charge against a Republican president are the two Senators from Arizona: Jeff Flake and John McCain.

Flake, who is up for re-election in 2018, has repeatedly criticized the president despite the Senator’s inability to accomplish anything on his own. Now the anti-Trump Senator has gone so far as to write a book containing highly-critical passages of his president.

In the book, Flake says that Republicans must fight for what he calls true conservatism and denounce the White House’s populist approach.

“We must not condone it,” Flake writes. “We must not use it to frighten and exploit the base. We must condemn it, in no uncertain terms.”

Flake has come out publicly denouncing Trump’s support for the RAISE Act, which would limit immigration to those who could thrive in the U.S., and the president’s promise to renegotiate NAFTA and TPP – both of which have or would send American jobs overseas.

Flake is likely to lose his reelection in Arizona as he is deeply unpopular in his home state. Trump supporters are likely to put their efforts and money on anyone challenging the anti-Trump Senator.

Flake isn’t the only anti-Trump Senator in Arizona. More infamously, John McCain has been a vocal critic of the president.

The president would like nothing more than to be done in Afghanistan. He is considering sending General H.R. McMaster, the current National Security Advisor, to lead American forces in the region and get it won. McCain wants to send even more troops into a region known for becoming a quagmire for major military powers.

McCain is now pushing to have Congress develop a military strategy for Afghanistan. While he was in the military, he spent much of his time in captivity, crashing jets and otherwise escaping his own misdeeds. Even with his limited military accomplishments, surely he realizes the falicy of having Congress craft a war plan.

“Sen. McCain was in the military, he knows how ludicrous it would be for Congress to come up with a military strategy,” said Chris Spoehr, director of the Center for National Security at the Heritage Foundation.

McCain has been a vocal critic of Trump on everything from Syria to immigration and health care. All while doing a whole bunch of nothing to help working families here at home.

Senator McCain was part of the cast of GOP establishment characters that tried to take Donald Trump down during the 2016 primaries and failed – big league.

Why does the Republican establishment now feel that going against their president is the answer? Going anti-Trump again is senseless, unhelpful and has already been proven to be a failed strategy. Working class families are seeing positive results, feeling more optimistic than they have in a decade and are thanking one person for their new found hope – President Donald Trump.

NAFTA (free trade) has been in place for decades. Manufacturing jobs have fled the country while the promise of high-tech employment ended up going to H1-B visa immigrants who were willing to do those well-paying jobs for much less. Immigration causes deflationary wage pressures and open immigration is only necessary for a country in which no one wants live. The United States is not in that category.

McCain and Flake are either on purpose or unwittingly pushing the new world order – and those of us just trying to keep a roof over our kids’ heads do not agree.
