Nightmare Hostage Situation in Algeria-6 Killed 25 Flee to Safety

A high-stakes stand-off between the Algerian troops and the Islamist armed captors, known as the “Battalion of Blood,” encamped at the Amenas Gas Field in Algeria has caused an international hostage crisis.

A breaking Reuters story describes the escape of twenty-five hostages and the demise of six others from an oil field located in the Sahara Desert. Though another source says thirty-five die and only seven survive. Conflicting reports abound, as the situation is constantly unfolding.

The oil field partly owned by BP was taken over by militants Wednesday January 16^th, 2013.  After storming the gas field and killing a security guard in the process, the gunmen managed to take at least eight people hostage including English, Norweigian, and Japanese citizens causing an international hostage situation.
