The    Saudi execution of a prominent Shiite cleric has drawn promises of retaliation from Shiite  Iran.        

- Saudi Arabia will pay “a high price” for executing prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday, Iran’s foreign ministry said.

Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari strongly condemned the execution, which came after his Shiite country repeatedly asked its Sunni-ruled rival to pardon the cleric.                                                                                     source    

Al Jazeera Says:

Saudi Arabia has executed 47 “terrorists”, according to the interior ministry, including Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr………………..

In a press statement read out on state TV on Saturday, the ministry listed the names of all those it said were already convicted on charges of terrorism.

The death sentence given to Nimr al-Nimr, who led anti-government protests in the country’s east, was confirmed by the Supreme Court in October.

Following the statement, Iran condemned the execution, saying that Riyadh was executing “opponents of terrorism”.
