Already Thursday, roof damage has been reported in Lindsborg, Kansas, where 90-mph winds were estimated behind an area of decaying thunderstorms. Baseball-size hail has been reported at at least two locations in Kansas. The storms then tore across the Ozarks before reintensifying over northeast Arkansas, where at least one building has been destroyed by straight-line winds.

(REPORTS: Thursday Storms Rip from Kansas to Tennessee)

Here are the details on severe weather for the next few days:

  • Thursday, Southeast: A squall line of severe thunderstorms will continue its swath of damage across the Mid-South and northern parts of the Gulf Coast states. Damaging winds over 70 mph are the main threat along with flooding rainfall. (Scroll down for updates in our live ticker.) Other strong to severe storms are breaking out in the Carolinas.
  • Thursday into Thursday night, Plains: Additional thunderstorms with a few tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds are possible on the High Plains of eastern Colorado. These may again turn into another long-lived squall line for Friday as they move east, as happened Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
  • Friday: Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail possible from the Colorado Front Range to parts of the Mid-South and northern Gulf Coast states. Maximum TOR:CON: 4

See Dr. Greg Forbes’s TOR:CON tornado forecast for a state-by-state breakdown of areas at risk of tornadoes over the next several days.

Flash Flood Threat

Flash Flood Risk

As thunderstorms repeatedly cross the central U.S. in the coming days, rainfall totals will add up. Some places have already seen over 5 inches of rain this week, possibly wiping out drought in the Central Plains, but also leading to flooding concerns. Omaha, Nebraska, had its wettest June day in history Tuesday, breaking a 139-year-old record with 5.30 inches of rain and single-handedly wiping out its rainfall deficit for 2014.

Areas at risk of flash flooding the next few days:

  • Thursday: Flash flooding possible in a swath from eastern Colorado and Kansas through the Ozarks and into the Tennessee Valley. Western portions of this area are in a drought, but repeated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could change that quickly. Serious flash flooding is already underway in parts of West and Middle Tennessee.
  • Friday: Kansas, northern Oklahoma, and parts of Missouri are at risk for flash flooding as more thunderstorms add to the rainfall totals. Significant flash flooding may develop in parts of Kansas.
  • Saturday: Risk of flash flooding, possibly significant, in Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, northern Arkansas, Missouri, and parts of the lower Ohio Valley.

Lightning is of course always dangerous. Keep that in mind if you have outdoor plans in the orange areas on our thunderstorm maps.
