The SyFy Channel has built a reputation for taking the creature/horror genre to its (il)logical extreme, and the recent release of the movie “Sharknado” is certainly no exception. The antics in the film, which involve tornadoes filled with man-eating sharks, might seem beyond ridiculous. (And well, for the most part, they are.) But the film’s central premise — that a tornado could pluck creatures from the sea and deposit them on land — actually has some scientific merit.

In fact, there are numerous accounts throughout history of animals raining from the sky, most likely the result of getting sucked up by a tornado. Although no shark tornadoes have ever been reported, tornadoes and waterspouts have been known to lift animals like fish, frogs and even alligators and drop them ashore, often still alive and kicking. (Yes, you read that right: alligators.)

Though nothing crazy like Sharknado could happen, animals have been sucked up into twisters and dropped off miles andmiles fromwhere they werepicked up. Its one of the mystifying things a tornado does. They put stras of hay through solid trees, smush one house and leave the one next door completely untouched and of course,pick up animals andtoss them miles away. I watched sharknado, i was expecting it to be more crazy than it was and that plot was almost identical to 500 MPH storm starring Casper Van Dien but all in all, a decent terrible movie. Andjust for the record, I think its shameful of SyFy to have cut Tara Ried from Sharknado 2, yes they are making a sequel, for ‘bad acting’. Syfy films aren’t exactly known for their acting prowess. Cut the woman a break. The entertainment industry has used her up and sit her out an if anyone needed that 50k paycheck for doing the 1st one, it was her. (both Ian Zeiring and Tara Ried were payed $50,000 for being the main stars of Sharknado). -Mort
