Mayor: Order to Evacuate Miami Likely by Thurs for Incoming Hurricane With 180 MPH Winds - Hurricane Irma Has Become so Strong it’s Showing up on Seismometers Used to Measure Earthquakes

Citizens of Miami Florida and its surrounding area are likely to be told to EVACUATE sometime Wednesday or Thursday, as Hurricane IRMA bears down on Southeast Florida packing confirmed sustained winds of 180 Miles Per Hour.

With Hurricane Irma, now an “extremely dangerous” category 5 storm bearing down on southeastern Florida, the Miami Herald reports that Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez has told reporters that an evacuation order was “probably coming late Wednesday or early Thursday.” According to the latest forecasts, the storm is expected to make landfall in the US this weekend, unless the jet stream pulls it in a more northerly direction.

As we reported earlier, the storm has shifted west more quickly than forecasters had anticipated. As of Tuesday, the storm was on track to slam Miami, though its eventual path may vary.

“Over the past couple of days, the track of the storm has shifted “a lot further to the west”, and at this point it appears that Miami is the most likely to take the full force of the hurricane.  But as we have seen, trying to forecast the behavior of hurricanes is not an exact science.  Irma may never become a category 5 storm, and it may never hit the U.S. at all.  Or it may zip past Florida to the south and end up making landfall in the Gulf of Mexico.  The truth is that we just don’t know.”

Gimenez said county evacuation zones A and B would be the target of the order. Miami Beach and much of the coastal areas of Miami and southern Dade have a particularly high risk of flooding. Plus, future orders may broaden the evacuation target. Evacuation orders trigger a voluntary evacuation ahead of expected coastal flooding, with officials warning emergency services will not be available during a storm in the areas.

Gimenez said the first wave of evacuations of about 2,000 vulnerable residents will probably start Wednesday morning.

“This is a powerful storm that poses a serious threat to our area,” Gimenez said at a Tuesday afternoon briefing.

In any collapse, common foods are going to be hard to come by.  In a natural disaster or similar occurrence, most grocery stores will be out of food and water within hours. During hurricanes, we all remember seeing televised images of empty shelves at grocery stores.

In a worldwide catastrophe, not only will all food and water items be likely depleted from every place imaginable it will most likely never be refilled.

Those who are prepared for this crisis will have a much greater chance of survival significantly longer than those who have not put any thought into it.

The big question is what exactly would be the most important food staples to put away? Storing away nothing but cooking oil and canned tuna, will do very little to help you survive long term in a healthy state.  

What are Food Staples?

Food staples are foodstuffs that have become routinely eaten by a particular population.The food staple usually provides the necessary vitamins and nutrients needed for that population’s daily nutritional requirements. Thus, that particular food item tends to be featured at almost every meal.

Most staples are grains, due to their abundance and easy cultivation.

In ancient times, food staples were used in case of time of famine or a less than expected harvest.

This was due to the ability for staple foods to store for long period of time. Staples are inherently non-perishable, seasons could come and pass but the harvest of one’s food staple crop would still be viable to eat.

US-bound Hurricane Irma has gotten so strong that it is showing up on equipment designed to measure earthquakes. 

Stephen Hicks, a seismologist at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, said seismometer recordings on Guadeloupe, an island group in the southern Caribbean Sea, show the now-Category 5 storm approaching the Lesser Antilles, another Caribbean island group. 

“Seismometer recordings from the past 48 hours on Guadeloupe show Cat. 5 #Hurricane #Irma driving closer toward the Lesser Antilles,” Dr Hicks tweeted. 

In a later tweet, Dr Hicks clarified that background noise – for example, wind causing trees to move and crashing ocean waves – was causing seismographs to pick up Irma. 

Irma, which is already the strongest hurricane ever recorded outside the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, is likely to make landfall somewhere in Florida over the weekend.

Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands have declared states of emergency. 

Rick Scott, the governor of Florida, has said Irma’s exact path is unknown, but that the storm could affect “millions of Floridians”. 

Food staples are always worth having in your doomsday pantry. With the looming chance of a global apocalypse always on the horizon, stocking up while the “getting is good”, is much better than wishing you had after the fact. Information is priceless, and while hindsight is always 20/20, history has taught us that those who are prepared make it through to tell the tale.

What happens if we lose power indefinitely — foods that require freezing or refrigeration for long term storage are going to go bad? Emergency food storage in advance will be the only way to feed yourself and your family.
