First Wikileaks UFO Cable: USSR Investigated UFOs

Norwegian news site, Aftenposten.no, released the first U.S. diplomatic cable that confirms UFO research during the USSR era. More than that, actually. It states that the USSR investigated a wide variety of “paranormal phenomena.”

Yuriy Zhadobin, who was Chairman of the intelligence service of the former Soviet Republic of Belarus, is quoted stating that they no longer chase or investigate paranormal phenomena due to the breakup of the USSR and exhausted resources. Written in the U.S. embassy in Minsk, the cable seems to suggest that the Soviets did investigate UFO phenomena back in the day.

The article reads (according to Google’s translation):

Internet site Wikileaks has obtained more than 250 000 documents from U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide.

Aftenposten has gained access to all documents without any clauses.

The documents will be continually reviewed as the basis of articles by the same editorial criteria and ethical rules as the rest of the Evening Post’s journalism.

The wire’s subject reads: “EMBASSY MINSK WEEKLY POL/ECON REPORT – December 21, 2007″ and begins: “The following are brief items of interest compiled by Embassy.”

From there it rattles on about issues that were important that week, such as “Opposition Groups Protest Social Benefit Cuts,” and “First U.S. Investment in Belarus’ Banking System.” The entire thing largely deals with the domestic economy, and international trade.

It’s the last tidbit that’s really interesting here (to me, at least.)

“Unlike during the USSR, the department is not engaged in studying paranormal phenomena. [Back then,] we had greater means and opportunities which we could spend on anything and everything.

Today the situation is different. Then, when society was excited by something, it entered our sphere of interest. But when it comes to healers, UFOs and such, we just can´t deal with them any more.”
