Why Chewing Sounds Can Drive Some People Up A Wall

Chewing sounds can get on everyone’s nerves at one time or another, but for a certain few, those times when they hear someone chomping away on their food, it can really  get on their nerves something fierce. Sometimes, it’s enough to send them into an extreme tizzy!

It’s not just the chewing sounds, other noises trigger it off as well. As if someone drove a noise wedge through their skull?!

The sound of chewing is probably one of the most annoying sounds on the planet, if you are the type of person who cannot naturally block it out, you know EXACTLY how horrible it can be. People who complain about others chewing are not merely being difficult to be around, the sound is literally amplified in their brain to such a level that they cannot ignore it.

How To Live longer

The same thing can happen with the sound of someone cutting their nails or even tapping their feet. This sound is not only annoying, it can drive some people into an uncontrollable rage. This neurological disorder is called “mysophonia” or the fear of sound.

The condition comes from the central nervous system. It is hard wired to auditory stimuli in a negative way. This causes an individual suffering from the disorder to feel panic, disgust, or anger. They can even experience a “fight or flight” sensation or an anxiety attack.

That might seem like bad news to some, but it might also say something about who one is as a person. This disorder may mean that the one suffering from it may be more creative than most. “Northwestern research provides the first physiological evidence that real-world creativity may be associated with a reduced ability to filter “irrelevant” sensory information.” (Northwestern University)

Basically, those who are naturally creative have a harder time blocking out annoying sounds.

To learn more about mysophonia and maybe even a method to treat it, take a look at the video below.

And remember, chewers and chewies, it’s not anyone’s fault. It all has to do with the brain!

The other sound that makes me crazed is when animals groom/lick themselves. I love all animals, I don’t eat meat even, but that grooming sound makes me want to hurl, so it’s been difficult for me to own cats or dogs. I mean I don’t want to thwart their natural instincts. Certainly this could make for an irritable, even aggressive pet. But the sound they make makes me want to interrupt them to the point that if I don’t do so I risk hurtling into an unbearable degree of anxiety.
