As more dogs and pets are discarded by the public every day, occasionally a good story will emerge like this one.
A group of caring souls in Monroe, North Carolina have decided to do something about this terrible issue in their own community.
“We are a group of dedicated people who are sick & tired of seeing pets suffer. We’re also sick & tired of hearing that Animal Control wouldn’t do anything.”
The group did something simple and relevant. They started a blog:
Project Slum Dogs: Monroe, NC
While fellow townspeople are throwing away domestic animals to fend for themselves, this group is blogging about it.
“We are an anonymous group of dedicated volunteers whose hearts break every time we see abused and neglected dogs. We know there are laws on the books to put things right. Our purpose with this blog is to put the word out so the authorities know where to go to help those animals in need.”
What an ingenious idea. If every town created a blog like this, imagine the good work that could be done. Imagine the criminals spotlighted when any wrongdoing is carried out on an animal. Imagine animal control organizations forced to work with the community to insure all animals receive due process.
This group has a mission statement that walks the walk:
“It is important for everyone to know that in less than two weeks the following has been accomplished:
1. Dog houses are in the process of being given to those in need at no charge.
2. The fence company was out today measuring for pens for those in need at no charge.
3. The Humane Society of Union County will spay/neuter dogs over 40 pounds at no charge.
4. The Monroe Police have brought shavings to dogs in need at no charge.
5. There is a volunteer who has been visiting the pet owners in the company of Animal Control or the Monroe Police. This volunteer doesn’t go alone, is there solely to HELP and has been well received by the pet owners. A dog owner will never be told to give up their pets. Never.
6. One Pit puppy was willingly given to rescue. An adoption is in progress.
We are making great progress. The dogs are getting helped. We do not want a rogue “do-gooder” to spoil relations and stir up trouble in the community; the pets will suffer.”
This could be any neighborhood in the nation. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Project Slum Dogs is growing in leaps and bounds and needs rescue help. This group is made up of average people, good neighbors, who need qualified rescue groups to help them with some of the saved dogs like little 12 week old Valentina.
