A New Zealand volcano that featured as Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings movies is in danger of erupting as pressure builds in a subterranean vent, officials have said.
The Department of Conservation warned hikers to avoid the summit of Mount Ruapehu, saying that temperature readings by scientists indicated there was an increased risk of eruption at New Zealand’s largest active volcano.
‘The current situation can’t continue, Ruapehu is so active that the temperatures have been going up and down a lot,’ DOC volcanic risk manager Harry Keys told Radio New Zealand.

‘They generally haven’t gone up as we’ve expected for some weeks now and sooner or later that situation will be rectified, either in a small, relatively passive way, or with a significant eruption.’
Official monitoring body GNS Science said the temperature a few hundred metres below a lake in the crater of the North Island mountain was estimated at 800C (1,472F) but the temperature at the lake itself was just 20C (68F).
It said this indicated a vent was partially blocked, leading to increased pressure that made eruptions more likely ‘over the next weeks to months’.
The 2,797m (9,177f) mountain last erupted in 2007, sending a lahar – a fast-moving stream of mud and debris – down the mountain but causing no injuries.

Yes faultless stuff though I would like to point out that no one lives too close. Pyroclastic flows being the largest immediate concern. That would have to involve a cataclysmic eruption 1000 times worse than anything we’ve ever seen and we’ve had our share.
Sure a moderate eruption could cut a major arterial route but we do have an alternate, or two, and we normally fix stuff up fairly smartly when it gets broke.
She’ll be right.
The last great explosion from her, sent boulders as far north as Auckland .
Yep Coalpony, when Lake Taupo blew up in 232 AD it wiped out the vegation between there & Auckland in just 10 minutes ! NZ is ripe for a big eruption.. AJ Perth, Aus.
But Taupo is a different Volcano and one of the worlds fourth largest super volcano. I’m not at all sure the thread author was alluding to such. I fail to see your point but suspect it might have been a fishing attempt?
Good thing about half the north island being toasted in seconds. The anguish will be over before we know it.
Folks. Try to to only worry about stuff you can control. She’ll be right.

Panic on Mt Tongariro as volcano erupts
A teacher who was on Mt Tongariro with a group of 90 students has captured the ‘‘absolutely spectacular’’ eruption of the volcano on video.
GNS Science confirmed the eruption, at the Te Maari crater, happened shortly after 1.20pm. It is the second eruption on the mountain this year; an eruption on August 6 was the first on Tongariro for more than 100 years.
