Minnesota Congressman's Fundraising Visit Highlights Joe Donnelly's Liberal Record
INDIANAPOLIS – Joe Donnelly has spent the last several months desperately trying to convince Hoosiers that he’s a thoughtful moderate willing to break with his party. However, Donnelly’s fundraiser today with Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson (D-MN) highlights the difference between Joe Donnelly and a true moderate Democrat.
“Congressman Peterson actually has broken with the Democrat Party on several important occasions, proving yet again that Joe Donnelly is not a moderate,” stated Mourdock campaign spokesman Christopher Conner. “Congressman Peterson is the kind of moderate Joe Donnelly hopes to be when he grows up.”
A quick review of their voting record tells Hoosiers all they need to know:
ObamaCare
• Peterson voted against ObamaCare, citing concerns over spending, unfunded Medicare liabilities and abortion
• Donnelly provided a key vote for ObamaCare
Stimulus
• Saying it wasn’t going to solve the problem, Peterson voted against the wasteful stimulus
• Donnelly voted for the stimulus, saying he was “pleased” with its passage and that it would create and save much needed jobs
TARP
• Peterson voted against the Wall Street Bailout, saying it was “not the right solution”
• Donnelly voted for the Bailout
“Joe Donnelly’s record of supporting ObamaCare, the stimulus and the Wall Street Bailout tell Hoosiers all they need to know – Donnelly is a liberal Democrat who, if elected, will be a lock-step vote for Harry Reid and his far-left agenda,” said Mourdock Campaign Spokesman Chris Conner.
BACKGROUND:
OBAMACARE
Peterson Voted Against The Final Version Of The Obama-Pelosi-Reid Health Care Bill That President Obama Signed Into Law. (H.R. 3590, CQ Vote #165: Motion Agreed To 219-212: R 0-178; D 219-34, 3/21/10, Peterson Voted Nay)
Peterson Said He Wouldn’t Support A Bill That Incorporated Abortion-Related Services. “‘If this bill has abortion in it, it will not pass,’ Peterson said to applause. ‘Anything like euthanasia … it will not pass. … There will not be a government option in this final bill. There may be a co-op, and we all know co-ops — it would be a publicly owned cooperative like the REA or your credit union.’” (Brad Swenson, “Health care forum split on government involvement,” [MN] The Bemidji Pioneer, 8/18/09)
“Donnelly’s Support Gives Democrats A Key Vote,” Said An Indianapolis Star Headline. (Maureen Groppe, “Donnelly’s Support Gives Democrats A Key Vote,” Indianapolis Star, 3/22/10)
“Indiana Rep. Joe Donnelly’s Decision Sunday To Back A Health-Care Overhaul Package Helped Give Democrats The Votes Needed To Pass The Bill. The outcome became assured after a group of anti-abortion Democrats that included Donnelly announced Sunday afternoon that they had reached an agreement with the White House over abortion coverage.” (Maureen Groppe, “Donnelly’s Support Gives Democrats A Key Vote,” Indianapolis Star, 3/22/10)

“‘Bottom Line, I Don’t Think This [Stimulus] Is Going To Solve The Problem,’ He [Peterson] Said.” (Kevin Diaz, “Peterson: Stimulus is flawed,” [MN] Star Tribune, 1/31/09)
Donnelly Said He Was “Pleased” That The Stimulus Passed And The Bill Will “Create And Save Much-Needed Jobs And Help Get Our Economy Back On Track. “‘I was pleased that The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed in the House of Representatives today,’ Donnelly said. ‘I voted for this legislation because it will create and save much-needed jobs and help get our economy back on track. Our current economic situation is too dire to do nothing, and I believe this stimulus plan is one of the answers to getting our economy back on the path to recovery.’” (Rep. Joe Donnelly Press Release, “Rep. Donnelly Lauds Passage Of Recovery And Reinvestment Plan,” 2/14/09)

Donnelly Voted To Approve The TARP Program. (H.R. 1424, CQ Vote #681: Agreed To 263-171: R 91-108; D 172-63, 10/3/08, Donnely Voted Yea)
