I’ve been thinking a lot about feet recently. Of course it’s sandal weather at the moment so we all like to have pretty toes don’t we? And then we unwrap them from the socks and slippers of winter and gasp either covering them up quickly again or screaming ‘Pedicure!’But what if our feet played a major role in strengthening our connection with the universe and our intuitive abilities? Wouldn’t that motivate you to look after them all year round?
My feet have always been the least favourite part of my body. Pulled out of school when I was young I was told I had flat feet and sent for special exercises. My second toe is longer than my big toe on both feet! My second and third toes on both feet are slightly webbed (connected) so I could never wear the funky socks with individual toes that were a fashion trend when I was a teenager. Oh, I am so embarrassed by my feet. I remember complaining to my Mum once about the ‘webbed’ issue and she said, ‘so what, you’re a good swimmer aren’t you?’ Always one to look on the bright side!
I also have circulatory problems with my feet: not only do they get cold but I lose all feeling in them so to keep them covered and wrapped up means I don’t have to consider them often. Until recently…
….when I took up rebounding again! For those of you who don’t know, a rebounder is a mini trampoline that you can jump or jog on all in the private comfort of your home. It is tremendous fun and I used to do it a lot and now I’m doing it again. Now, you can rebound with trainers on but it feels easier to me to do it barefoot. Once I’d started again I realised how immobile my feet had become. It hurt to bend them as I connected with the net and the constant adjustment through them to keep your balance left them aching for ages afterwards.
If you look at any baby their feet are as flexible and expressive as their hands. Most of us tend to lose this ability to express ourselves through our feet although it doesn’t have to be so: there are some wonderfully gifted people who use their feet just like hands because they do not have hands or have lost the use of them. If you look at any person who has problems walking or being mobile their feet are stiff and unresponsive. I’ve noticed this a lot in elderly people.
Of course, there are a huge amount of health benefits in having flexible feet: get your feet right and your whole muscular-skeletal system works properly.Flexible feet also help the meridian energy channels in our feet stay clear which means improved energy flow in our physical body. Your foot meridians are the ones that reflexologists work on.
But there are other benefits too. When our feet ‘work’ properly they are as capable as our hands for picking up information. At the same time, they are also great for communicating with the earth when we go barefoot.I went to a talk recently given by Karen Kingtson (internationally renowned Space Clearer) and she always works barefoot. By doing so she connects with the earth and this connection then joins with her spiritual connection through her chakras. More detail about the way I see this working can be found in one of my previous articles ‘Do You Know Your Place’.
Of course, it’s hard to make that connection if your feet are stiff and covered in callouses (just imagine what it would be like if your hands were like this) so it pays to look after them, keep them healthy and keep them flexible. Not only will you get enormous health benefits but you’ll open up your sensory experience of this world and your ability to access information: sole speaking to soul.
