Gun Ban Bill Introduced In New York State Senate

Democrats have introduced 8 different gun control bills at the federal level, but that hasn’t stopped New York State Democrats from taking matters into their own hands. New York already has pretty strict gun laws, and if state Senator Diaz has his way the laws will be even more stringent. Senate Bill S1422-2013 will repeal the old Clinton-era gun laws and increase the penalty for the possession, use, or sale of certain firearms and ammunition and redefines “assault weapon”.

AN ACT to amend the penal law, in relation to increasing the penalty for
the possession, use, or sale of certain firearms and ammunition, the
definition of assault weapon, and to repeal subdivision 22 of section
265.00 of the penal law relating to the definition of an assault weap

The bill would also make it a felony for anyone to possess more than ten firearms.
This bill seems to be in line with Governor Cuomo’s desire to pass the strictest gun ban in the country.
A breakaway group of New York legislators vowed Friday to help Gov. Andrew Cuomo pass the strongest assault-weapons ban in the country.
Sen. Jeffrey Klein, a Democrat from the Bronx, N.Y., who heads the now-five-member Independent Democratic Conference, said after a 90-minute meeting in Cuomo’s office that the group supports the governor’s legislation “wholeheartedly” and that he hopes it will be passed as soon as possible — preferably this month.
The governor has yet to reveal his gun-control proposal publicly but has said one is expected as part of his State of the State address Wednesday. (Read More)
Dean Skelos, the leader of Senate Republicans, might be on board if any gun control measures include mental health control. Since the Democrats pretty much control all of Albany expect either Diaz’s bill, or something similar, to be rammed through quite quickly.
