It Would Be So Easy, Or Would It?

There aren’t many conservatives left who can’t bring themselves to jump on board the Trump Train. One by one we see some of the leading voices on the right falling in line. Some of them just feel there’s no other choice, because Hillary Clinton is so awful. I get that. There’s no way I would ever vote for that woman, so it’s understandable that some people feel that rolling the dice for Trump is the better option.

Then there are those who really do support him, which completely baffles me. One person who I have respect for told me he was very hesitant to support Trump, but after listening to people that he respects he was convinced that supporting the lunatic was the right thing to do. I didn’t ask, but I wondered who are these people that he respects. Is it Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, or other pundits and writers with big followings? Then I wondered what is really motivating them. They have to do mental gymnastics to convince themselves and their audiences that Trump really is one of us.

Are they deluded, or did they never really believe the things they were saying in the first place? These are people whose livelihoods depend on having a large audience – they need readers clicking on their websites and buying their books, they need viewers watching their shows and listeners for their radio programs. For them, getting behind Trump was the easy thing to do when they saw how he tapped into the anger a lot of Republican voters are feeling. Why risk going against the new messiah and losing out on all of that revenue?

I guess it would be easy for me to just join in. Coming out against Trump was pretty much the death knell for this blog. It’s not how I make a living, but it used to generate some extra income. Now it’s a financial burden. But, I just can’t do it. I just can’t bring myself to support a long time liberal, whose adult children – who are major players in his campaign – couldn’t even vote for him in the primary because they didn’t change their party registrations in time.

I can’t bring myself to try to convince the few of you left that the orange crazy clown isn’t an orange crazy clown. I can’t bring myself to argue that his latest proposal to expand Medicaid is a great idea that will make everything better. I can’t bring myself to argue that Ivanka’s big maternity leave plan is the most conservative policy proposal ever. (Seriously, I accidentally tuned in to Sean Hannity’s radio show the other day and he and Newt Gingrich were actually saying that. Newt was babbling on about how another big government program is a fantastic conservative plan. It was like being in some sort of parallel universe. Oh, and how is that working out for Ivanka, anyway? Trying to out left the left never works. But I digress.)

I can’t convince myself that Trump’s plan to spend more government money (ie: money taken from working Americans) than Hillary Clinton wants to spend isn’t a horrible idea. I can’t bring myself to lie and tell you that everything I’ve argued for in the past is wrong, and everything I’ve argued against is right simply because crazy, creepy, leftist Mr. Trump now has an R at the end of his name.

I can’t convince myself that a man who has been close friends with the Clinton’s for years, has donated lots of money to them and their political allies, and met with Bill the day before he announced his candidacy, isn’t one of them. I can’t convince myself, or try to convince you, that the guy who spent scads of money to help Mitch McConnell stay in power isn’t part of the establishment.

I have to admit that watching the reaction to a Trump win by progressive weenies would be wicked fun. But when the dust settles, and another progressive “Republican” moves into the White House, what will we have won?

Sorry, but no can do. I’m not up to the challenge of Olympic level mental gymnastics. I’ll have to just leave that to the professionals.
