Christian Persecution Begins In US: Openly Gay Houston Mayor Subpoenas Pastors Sermons (Video)
Lately every piece of news has seemed surreal. We have Ebola spreading in America and a government who not only will not issue a travel ban, but seems incompetent on how to handle the crisis itself.
As we walk through the looking glass, there is yet another surreal piece of news. The City of Houston has subpoenaed pastors demanding to see their sermons. Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity to Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor.
City attorneys are demanding “all speeches, presentations, or sermons related to HERO, the Petition, Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality, or gender identity prepared by, delivered by, revised by, or approved by you or in your possession.”
My friends, the persecution of Christian pastors has begun in this country. We previously warned about the efforts of the Freedom from Religion Foundation and its secretive settlement with the IRS allowing them to demand sermons to scrutinize for “political activity.” Well, it has indeed happened, in one of the reddest of red states in the reddest county in America: Houston, Harris County, Texas.
As reported on Steve Quayle’s website, Pastors are fighting back.
Executive Director of the Texas Pastor Council Dave Welch, one of five pastors who received the subpoena, said he would not be intimidated by Parker nor comply with the city’s demands.
“My answer to that is – bring it on,” he said.
This is the test case (and as it happens I was just in Houston last week and will be back next Monday) and this is unconscionable!
However, if this case is successful, it will be replicated elsewhere — and where is the Left screaming out about First Amendment rights of these pastors: “Freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof?” Where is the ACLU? After all, they care so much about the rights of unlawful enemy combatants aka Islamic jihadists and terrorists.

HOUSTON (KTRK) –The City of Houston wants sermons from pastors engaged in the legal battle over the controversial equal rights ordinance. In a subpoena to five members of the Houston Area Pastors Council, the city is requesting a long list of documents and communications.
Among them are “all speeches, presentations, or sermons” related to the Equal Rights Ordinance and “all communications with members of your congregation” regarding it and the failed petition against it. It is the city’s latest move as it defends itself against a lawsuit filed in August requesting the ordinance be suspended.
Pastor Hernan Castano received a subpoena and believes his sermons are protected by the First Amendment. “For a city government to step into churches and ask pastors to turn in sermons, it’s gone too far. This is not what America, the nation is about,” he told Eyewitness News.
Ed Morrisey at HotAir.com: The subpoenas for any electoral activity might be legally acceptable, since churches have a tax exemption — but that is generally a state and federal issue, not a municipal distinction.
The demand to produce any comments regarding “homosexuality or gender identity” go straight to the heart of the First Amendment and on government censorship. The intent to intimidate Christian pastors into silence on these issues could not be clearer, and uses the threat of government action to back up that intimidation.
That is the goal of many liberals. They wish to silence Christians and other groups on issues with which they disagree. But the faith based community is fighting back.
Religious News Service: Arizona-based religious liberty advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom has filed a motion on behalf of the pastors seeking to halt the subpoenas. Five pastors filed a motion to stop the subpoenas they see as “overbroad, unduly burdensome, harassing, and vexatious.”
This reminds me of the IRS scandal where that government arm intimated and harassed conservative groups. No matter which side of the political spectrum you are, this is chilling for all of us. The government should never be in the business of intimidation tactics against American citizens. It’s beyond the pale.

The churches, and pastors, of Houston ought to respond to this sort of government order with the same kind of defiance the Apostle Paul showed the magistrates in Philippi. After an earthquake, sent by God, upturned the prison where Paul and Silas were held, Luke tells us that the officials sent the police to tell Paul and Silas they could go. Paul replied. “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned men who are Roman citizens and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly. No! Let them come themselves and take us out” (Acts 16:37).
A government has no business using subpoena power to intimidate or bully the preaching and instruction of any church, any synagogue, any mosque, or any other place of worship. The pastors of Houston should tell the government that they will not trample over consciences, over the First Amendment and over God-given natural rights.

Now that’s more like it! I like the fire of those statements! Let’s pray these pastors hold their ground against the wicked in power in Houston who are seeking to vet the righteous.
