Megastorms Could Drown Massive Portions Of California

Back in 1861 the California’s Central Valley region was inundated with cataclysm weather, it rained for 43 days .Entire communities were swept away and thousands of people died. It’s like something right out of the bible, when NOAA had to build the ark to prepare for the 40 days and 40 nights of rains.

If something like this were to happen today it would be far more devistating than it was back in 1861.The Central valley has a population of 6 million people.

Could this happen again? Was it a freak event?

No, according to Scientific America, the possibility  exists.

Sediment deposits in the region indicate that events like this happen roughly every 200 years.

The intense rainstorms sweeping in from the Pacific Ocean began to pound central California on Christmas Eve in 1861 and continued virtually unabated for 43 days. The deluges quickly transformed rivers running down from the Sierra Nevada mountains along the state’s eastern border into raging torrents that swept away entire communities and mining settlements. The rivers and rains poured into the state’s vast Central Valley, turning it into an inland sea 300 miles long and 20 miles wide. Thousands of people died, and one quarter of the state’s estimated 800,000 cattle drowned. Downtown Sacramento was submerged under 10 feet of brown water filled with debris from countless mudslides on the region’s steep slopes. California’s legislature, unable to function, moved to San Francisco until Sacramento dried out—six months later. By then, the state was bankrupt.

These pacific northwest storms can be crazy sometimes, especially when tropical storms destined for Baja or southern cali take a sharp turn to head toward the area between San Fransisco and Vancouver, BC. There was this storm here in Oregon back in the 60s, that was an extra-tropical cyclone(columbus day storm). It was technically a category 3 hurricane with wind gusts recorded at 175mph at the Oregon coast. It sustained hurricane strength all the way into Portland….that means it traveled 70 miles inland over a 2,000-4,000 coastal mountain range….wind gusts of 120mph recorded in Portland. It then moved up into Washington and continued to cause massive flooding. It killed 60ish people back then in 1962, but today the area is much more populated. I read about the storm above and it sounds kinda similar to the one happening now, where its a combination of storms moving in….

At first when I heard about the 20 inches of rain and 200 inches of snow I was concerned…then I saw where this will happen, and I calmed down. Luckily just north of San Fransisco is very rural….the whole coastal area remains very lowly populated until you get up into around central Oregon. Just by doing the math in my head I would say the coastal region of California north of San Fran and its subarbs probably has a population of…100,000. You have Arcata and Eureka right next to eachother, which are about 50,000 combined, you have crescent city with about 10,000, then just a bunch of super small towns and rural roads. Northern oregon coast you have brooking with 15,000 or so coos bay with 40,000….so essentially 100,000 also. So I was like “huge flood in area with people who deal with flooding all the time? big deal”. My only real concern is what will happen to next years marijuana harvest

But this central valley flooding may be really really bad…..thats a lot of people and a lot of land that isnt used to these kind of conditions. Also looking at the new updated map….it looks like vancouver, BC is going to get a lot of rain for some reason too. Hope it isnt 20 inches or so like northern cali….Vancouver is the third most densely populated city in Canerica( Canada and america) and is an island so I dont know how that situation would pan out. Luckily they have a lot of 30 storyish buildings.

Great Article. I like the NOAA word play!! I live in the Tennessee Valley, so I definitely love and use my NOAA radio. Everyone should have one of these, I don’t care where you live!

In a 1964 storm, the rivers in Humboldt County (The Lost Coast) topped out at a record 21feet over river level. They are already at that record level now and the storm isn’t over yet !

      Pray for the people there.

Yawwwnnnn. California has nothing to offer of value, except that it keeps the Pacific from lapping at Nevada. When California is gone, as in GONE, I’ll pray for a long spell of good weather.

The devastation of the 1861 flood was such that Governor Leland Stanford had to attend his inaguration via rowboat. The flood is also why the city of Sacrament was built a full level higher. While I can understand some concerns of flooding in the valley due to severe weather (the floods of 1986 come to mind… I had to access the radio station I worked for then via canoe), there are other things in place not available 150 years ago that reduce the threat considerably: a significant levee system (albeit weak in many spots), dams, weirs, and Gov. Edmund G. Brown’s California Aqueduct that effectively shortens the northern state’s available water for the benefit of those in the southern state. We’ll just funnel it all to L.A. and wash them away…
