Perfectly Preserved Roman Tombs Discovered Near City Of Capua Where Spartacus Trained As Gladiator

Archaeologists excavating near the city of Capua, Italy have unearthed two ancient tombs. One of the discovered sarcophagi still remains sealed. The find was made at the cemetery near the central Piazza San Tommaso d’Aquino.

The city of Capua is of great historical significance. By the ¨third century BC, Capua was the second most important city in Italy after Rome itself.

Capua provided Rome with thirty thousand infantry and four thousand cavalries in times of war.  After legendary Spartacus had been sold into slavery he trained at the gladiatorial school in Capua, north of Naples.
