With sweeping curtains, a chandelier and luxurious sofas, this was once the home of a seemingly well-to-do family in Syria.
But now it is a place of killing, where a rebel sniper was pictured taking aim from the window as his comrades casually lounge around.
The richly-decorated house is in the city of Aleppo, where constant fighting between government forces and rebels is tearing apart the lives of normal citizens.
Camouflaged members of the Free Syrian Army are holding positions around Syria’s second city to defend it from an assault by troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.
But most of the fighters aren’t holed up in such comfortable surroundings, and are instead taking cover in the rubble of their shell-hit city. The civil war has now been raging for 18 months and nearly 20,000 people have been killed – most of them civilians.
Today, U.N. human rights investigators accused Syrian government forces and allied shabbiha militia of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder and torture.
The rebels have also committed war crimes but these ‘did not reach the gravity, frequency and scale’ of those carried out by the army and security forces, they said.
‘The commission found reasonable grounds to believe that government forces and the shabbiha had committed the crimes against humanity of murder and of torture, war crimes and gross violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including unlawful killing, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, sexual violence, indiscriminate attack, pillaging and destruction of property,’ said the 102-page report by the independent investigators led by Paulo Pinheiro.
Both government forces and armed insurgents had violated rights of children during the 17-month-old conflict, it said.

Karen AbuZayd, an American expert serving as senior investigator alongside Pinheiro, said: ‘We have identified both parties as guilty of war crimes and of course a greater number and of bigger variety from the government side.
Meanwhile.. CNN runs nerve grinding stories about their reporters deep under cover avoiding sniper fire.
Not once do they admit that the sniper fire was from the rebels – even though the context of the article makes it obvious [reporting from inside the rebel stronghold, where traffic is noticeably lower a sniper fires at our vehicle. (change the subject) Then we here rebel fighters yelling at our vehicle to stop.]

Two days in Aleppo: Snipers, temporary graveyards and stairwell beds
Editor’s note: CNN’s Ben Wedeman and crew are some of the few international reporters in Syria, whose government has been restricting access of foreign journalists and refusing many of them entry. Wedeman spent two days this week in Aleppo, a city of more than 2 million people where rebels and government forces are fighting.
Below is an edited account of what Wedeman saw in Aleppo, including his harrowing trip into the city past snipers, street vendors selling their wares as bombs fall, and a lack of enthusiasm for the rebels’ battle among many civilians.
The crack of sniper fire welcomed us into a rebel-held part of Aleppo.
Traveling through a back road on Monday, with six people crammed into a small car, we drove through government-controlled territory, bypassing a checkpoint and rolling right past the military intelligence headquarters. Vendors sold tea and coffee by the side of the road, with traffic fairly normal.
Traffic was noticeably less as we approached a rebel-held area, one neighborhood over from the Salaheddine neighborhood where fierce fighting has raged. As the car passed an intersection near a Free Syrian flag, three or four shots rang out, apparently at the vehicle.
No one was hurt, and once the vehicle passed the intersection, rebel fighters nearby shouted for the driver to stop.

Viewed from Washington, the crisis in Syria has always had very little to do with Syria – and a lot to with Iran. Almost from the beginning, the United States has seen the eruption of the Syrian revolt as an opportunity to deal a severe blow to Tehran, depriving it of its chief regional ally and isolating its Lebanese partner, Hezbollah. For that reason, rather than seek a diplomatic solution that would try to bring both the government of President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition to the table, since last August President Obama has demanded that Assad step down. That had the intended effect of galvanizing the Syrian opposition, which – in response to a wantonly brutal crackdown by Syrian security forces – has increasingly become a militarized force engaged in outright civil war.
Although it paid lip service to the failed UN-Arab League sponsored mission of Kofi Annan to secure a diplomatic solution and a peaceful transfer of power in Damascus, in fact the United States is orchestrating a Western coalition in concert with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar in support of the armed rebellion in Syria. At the Pentagon, the State Department and the CIA, there are already regime-change preparations underway. Over the weekend, while visiting NATO member Turkey to meet with Syrian opposition leaders and Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish foreign minister, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explicitly declared that Washington is in the “operational” phase. “We have been closely coordinating over the course of this conflict, but now we need to get into the real details of such operational planning,” she said adding, “Our intelligence services, our military have very important responsibilities and roles to play, so we are going to be setting up a working group to do exactly that.”
There’s no doubt that, in Tehran, the Syrian crisis is seen as a dire threat. Yet, although the United States and its allies, including Israel, charge that Iran is heavily involved in providing military and intelligence support to Assad, in fact there is not much that Iran can do to prevent Assad’s collapse, if indeed that’s where things are headed, and many of the charges that Iran is playing a critical role in propping up Assad may be exaggerated. Writing in the Jerusalem Post, Alon Ben-Meir, a prominent analyst, warned – without evidence – that Iran might intervene directly in Syria, using military force. In tandem, the U.S. State and Treasury departments this week accused Hezbollah of “actively providing support to the Assad regime as it carries out its bloody campaign against the Syrian people.”
