Assange Embassy Siege Costing UK Taxpayers $75,000 Per Day

The cost of the British government’s siege of the Ecuadorean embassy to arrest Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is costing UK taxpayers over $75,000 per day.

Press TV – The British government has embarked on a policing act to constantly watch the Ecuadorean embassy in London costing UK taxpayers £50,000 a day, as long as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange remains trapped inside.

The government has warned it would order an immediate arrest if Assange tries to leave the premises of the Ecuadorean mission in Knightsbridge.

In an act of pursuing the capture of Assange, who has taken refuge at Ecuador’s London embassy since June, the British government set up an ongoing presence of police officers surrounding the building in order to grab Assange if he attempts to leave.

The police presence outside the embassy is costing British taxpayers £50,000 a day.

On Sunday 19 August, Assange gave his first public appearance on the balcony of the South American country’s embassy with hundreds of supporters and journalists filling the London street in Knightsbridge to hear his statement. The scene saw more than 100 uniformed police stationed outside the building, but powerless to arrest him because he did not leave the building.

With no side willing to compromise, the situation remains that at least 60 officers a day are obliged to surround the Ecuadorean embassy until further notice.
