Juno’s Independence Day Date With Jupiter

NASA’s Juno spacecraft is scheduled to enter into orbit around Jupiter Monday night (July 4), ending its nearly five-year trek to the solar system’s biggest planet.

The key event Monday is a 35-minute engine burn at 11:18 p.m. EDT (0318 GMT on Tuesday), which is designed to slow Juno down enough to be captured by Jupiter’s powerful gravity.

If something goes seriously wrong with this burn, the solar-powered Juno will zoom right past the gas giant, and the science goals of the $1.1 billion mission — which include mapping the gravitational and magnetic fields of Jupiter, and characterizing its internal structure — will go unachieved. Alien Probes?

With the JUNO mission on the news lately, it got me to thinking about how other civilizations that exist in the universe would be doing exactly as we are. What I mean is that they too would be sending out probes in advance of a possible mission to come here. Could this account for some, just some, of the UFO’s spotted every year around the planet? Sending probes is exactly what we do, so why would it be any different from a civilization around the same technological level as we are on?

JUNO will be crashed into Jupiter to prevent any contamination occuring with Europa, one of the Jovian moons. Microbes from Earth could, theoretically, end up on Europa and with the water on that moon, there would be a chance of life forming. One has to think whether or not that is in fact how life got to this planet!

Could it be that some alien probe brought life here? What about the comets & asteroids that we are now finding carry amino acids, the basic building blocks of life itself?

MARS ELECTRICAL CLUES

The above image comes from the surface of Mars (allegedly! I say that because its NASA, & we all know what they are like!).

Mars harbors a mysterious kind of dune-like structure that’s unlike anything seen on Earth, a new study reports.

These unusual sandy ripples might yield insights about how Mars has evolved over time from a potentially habitable world to the harsh, dry planet we know today, researchers added.

On Earth, wind blowing over sand causes the formation of either small ripples a few inches to a foot (30 centimeters) long to large dunes that can stretch for miles. Collectively, these structures are known as bedforms. [Curiosity Rover Studies Dark Dunes on Mars (Video)]

Now, by analyzing high-resolution images taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars rover Curiosity, scientists have discovered a kind of bedform intermediate in size between the tiny ripples and big dunes seen on Earth’s landmasses.

These bedforms “look similar to ripples that are formed by currents underwater on Earth,” said study lead author Mathieu Lapotre, a planetary geologist at the California Institute of Technology.

However, Mars is now too cold and dry for liquid water to persist long on its surface. As such, “the ripples were not created by a liquid, but by winds of theMartian atmosphere,” Lapotre told Space.com.

To explore the potential origins of these strange features, Lapotre and his colleagues developed a model based on decades of experiments involving flowing water and sand on Earth. They found the model could predict the spacing between the crests of the newfound Martian bedforms.

The researchers suggest that these Martian bedforms may result from how the viscous nature of air can have a greater effect on sand in the low-density atmosphere on Mars than on Earth. They named these structures “wind-drag ripples.”

“I find it fascinating to witness how different planetary environments affect the physics of geological processes,” Lapotre said.

To see if they could find ancient evidence of wind-drag ripples on Mars, the researchers analyzed data collected by NASA’s Opportunity rover at the Burns formation, a bed of rock up to about 3.7 billion years old. They found signs of these ripples in that ancient rock.

What is interesting is that I recently watched the following video from Suspicious Observers & he commented how these same shapes & patterns can be recreated in a lab using plasma & electricity. Yet another example of the highly active, electrical universe we live in!

Chemically Grown Drones?

Its little wonder that sometimes the stories I cover are regarded as fiction as opposed to fact! In this case is Sci-Fi, only its reality! Check this out! Drones that grow themselves from the molecular level up!

It sounds like an idea for a science fiction film, but here in the UK scientists and engineers are spending time and money to see if they can do exactly that.

British warplanes are already flying with parts made from a 3D printer.

Researchers are already using that same technology to build drones.

The military advantage is obvious – building equipment quickly and close to the battlefield – without long waits and long supply chains – gives you an enormous advantage over any enemy.

Chemical reactions

But the latest innovation being developed by Prof Lee Cronin at Glasgow University takes 3D printing to another level.

With industrial advice from BAE Systems, he is developing something called a “chemputer” which, in theory, would be able to “grow” small scale unmanned aircraft, or drones in a laboratory.

While a 3D printer physically makes the parts for a machine, the “chemputer” speeds up the chemical reactions from the molecular level.

Such a breakthrough could mean it would take weeks rather than months or years to build an aircraft from scratch.

An animated video of what it might be like is almost a scene out of Star Wars “Attack of the Clones”.

Prof Cronin admits that creating even small aircraft out of chemicals “would be very challenging”.
