SECOND EARTH?

The discovery of exoplanets is nothing new, with more and more being added to the list as each month goes by. Most of these are either too hot, too cold or hold some other reason for us not to get excited. However, astronomers are preparing to unveil the latest, and most promising when it comes to its potential to host life.

Scientists are preparing to unveil a new planet in our galactic neighbourhood which is “believed to be Earth-like” and orbits its star at a distance that could favour life, German weekly Der Spiegel reported Friday.

The exoplanet orbits a well-investigated star called Proxima Centauri, part of the Alpha Centauri star system, the magazine said, quoting anonymous sources.

“The still nameless planet is believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to Proxima Centauri that could allow it to have liquid water on its surface—an important requirement for the emergence of life,” said the magazine.

“Never before have scientists discovered a second Earth that is so close by,” it said, adding that the European Southern Observatory (ESO) will announce the finding at the end of August.

One reason this exoplanet stands out from the previous ones discovered is its relatively close proximety to Earth. The Alpha Centrauri star system is a mere stones throw away, well, in cosmic term that is. Its situated 4.24 light years from earth. That means that if you travel just below the speed of light you will get to the destination in just over 4.24 years.

As far as space missions go, this is most certainly achievable.

Forget underground bunkers, if this new planet they have found is viable, then the elites will race to build bases up there incase they mess things up beyond repair down here!

COSMIC COINCIDENCE?

In April this year I reported that Mark Zuckerberg is to join forces with Russian billionaire Yuri Milner & astrophysicist Dr Stephen Hawking in a mission to send “nano-craft” to Alpha Centauri, equipped with cameras & sensors to record and return data about the distant world.

Perhaps its just me, but i find it comically convenient that just four months later there is news of a potentail second-earth in that very star system.

What a coincidence huh? The odds on that happening must be, oh, astronomical (intentional pun)!

LOOKING CLOSER TO HOME FOR LIFE

We, and by that i mean humans, seem to think that we are rare, unique even, when it comes to life forms in this universe. On top of that we arrogantly, and naively, look for other life making the assumption that it will adhere to our interpretation of the laws of nature & biology. By definition, any other life form out there, whatever shape it may take, will be alien & unrecognisable to us with our level of knowledge/thinking.

Perhaps life is a lot closer to home than we thought too. Scientists are now saying that Venus may once have held the conditions neccessary for water to exist on the surface, a requirement for life.

As we currently know it, Venus is a planet that is most certainly unable to support life. Compared with Earth, the atmosphere on Venus is 90 times denser than that of Earth, and it sees high temperatures approach 900 degrees. The only similarity between Earth and Venus is that they are remarkable close together in size. NASA’s new research study may soon add similarities between Earth and Venus.

Using computer simulations that are used to track and predict climate change on Earth, scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies turned back the clock on Venus to 3 billion years ago. The goal was to determine if Venus ever saw a period of time where the environment was similar to what would be needed for life to develop. The computer models shocked scientists when it was realized that Venus would have been able to develop, and sustain, life for 2 billion years.

As the computer simulation of Venus was running, scientists learned that Venus has areas where oceans would have existed. Along with the oceans, large clouds would have filled the atmosphere which would have acted as shields, allowing temperatures on the surface to be similar to those on Earth. Due to the fact that Venus is closer to the sun than Earth is, these clouds would have been needed in the atmosphere to ensure that the strong solar rays would not have a direct line to the ground.

Michael Way was the lead author of the NASA study. Even though the computer model is still a “guess” as to what life on Venus was like 3 billion years ago, Way says “it’s the least wrong choice you can make.” Way expressed that there were many variables that NASA had to manipulate in order to get the result that showed favorability to life. These variables included rotation speed, atmosphere, and topography.

With new discoveries coming at us all the time, who knows where this is all leading to. I suspect that we may be on the verge of space-news becoming headline news. Between the new planets in outer space & governments weaponizing near space, this is somewhere we are going to have to keep our eyes on.
