Protesters gather in Hong Kong on Friday, August 16, to demonstrate against the government. The rally, s set to take place in Chater Garden, a park in the city center.

The protest is one among many that have seen demonstrators gather since the end of March against a government-proposed a legislative amendment which could enable Hong Kong to consider extradition requests from countries where there is no prior agreement. The discontent then grew into a variety of grievances ranging from calls for greater democracy and against police brutality.

Beijing to US: Don’t ‘stick your nose’ in China’s Hong Kong affairs

China rebuked Donald Trump for his Twitter-conveyed alarm over the amassment of troops near Hong Kong. The US should mind its own business and let China’s domestic affairs be, it said.
Zhang Hanhui, China’s freshly appointed ambassador in Moscow, reminded that Hong Kong is Chinese and not “American” or “English.” He thus cautioned foreign nations not to “stick their noses in our affairs,” TASS reports.

Hong Kong: Trump urges Xi to talk to protesters as weekend rallies loom

US President Donald Trump has said he is “concerned” about the risk of a violent Chinese crackdown in Hong Kong, as the city prepared for another weekend of protests.

Chinese authorities have stepped up rhetoric against protesters in recent days, likening them to terrorists and threatening to use force to end the demonstrations. Large numbers of paramilitary forces have also been moved to the nearby border city of Shenzhen, where they are drilling in a stadium.
