Marijuana has gained attention as more states and countries move towards legalization.

Cannabis is not a new phenomenon though. It’s been a part of some cultures in one way or another pretty much since the beginning of time.

Here, we’ve compiled some fun facts about marijuana.

Keep reading for everything you never knew you wanted to know about the wacky weed.

1. Ancient Beginnings

There’s evidence that as far back as 3000 BC, burnt cannabis seeds were laid in Siberian burial grounds when a body was placed to rest. They not only used the seeds but wove materials out of hemp and were aware of the psychoactive properties of the plant.

They weren’t the only ones to see the benefits of cannabis. As early as 2800 BC, a Chinese medical journal states it’s a powerful medicine. Hemp fabrics were often used in ancient Chinese clothing.

2. First Internet Sale

The first thing ever sold over the internet was a bag of weed. Stanford and MIT students were responsible for the first online sale of anything when they used the Arpanet Artificial Intelligence lab account to complete a marijuana sales transaction.

3. Thousands of Products Available

Everything from batteries to carpets can come from hemp. It doesn’t end there though. Products such as nail polish, diapers, paint, clothing, and thousands of more items are made from cannabis and hemp.

In fact, hemp has been in more than medicine and burial rituals for centuries.

Giant stones were more easily moved using the strength of hemp fibers woven to make ropes. Different civilizations have used it to build their communities.

4. Medical and Recreational Fun Facts About Marijuana

Marijuana is often ingested or inhaled in the form of bud, hash, shatter, pills and more. If inhaled, some roll joints, others prefer smoking through a pipe or bong or vapor e-cigarette.

Most partakers try various forms and methods of intake until they find the right one to help them.

Thousands have found it useful to treat many illnesses or at least minimize their symptoms.

From epilepsy to anxiety, MS to cancer, marijuana has helped relieve pain and discomfort, ended patterns of repeated seizures and given people of all ages a better quality of life.

Edibles aren’t limited to pot brownies anymore. You can get marijuana-infused coffee, candies, cakes, cookies, oils, sauces and pretty much anything else you consume.

Many edibles have cannabutter or cannabis-infused oils baked in. If you’re planning on making edibles or using other forms of marijuana to ease your pain, you’ll want to check out this useful site.

5. The U.S. Government Researched It As a Weapon

In the early 1960s, as John F Kennedy was at the height of popularity, the government was researching a synthetic form of marijuana to use as a weapon against their enemies.

They hoped to cause “couch lock” with high potency synthetic marijuana. Their strain had effects lasting more than a day. Their hope was to debilitate the enemy and overtake them while subdued.

6. There’s a Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana

Most people think the words cannabis, marijuana and hemp are interchangeable but that isn’t really the case.

Marijuana and hemp may be the same species of Cannabis Sativa but have different results.

Industrial hemp doesn’t have the same psychoactive properties that marijuana does so you can forget about smoking your hippy cousin’s hemp jacket when you run out of bud.

7. Your Sex Affects Your High

Hormone levels and where a woman is in her cycle could affect how cannabis affects someone.

According to a study in 2014 at the University of Washington, women are more likely to build a tolerance for the drug leading to dependence on the drug.

Females will be more sensitive to the effects when their estrogen is higher. Men will be more prone to suffering the munchies.

8. In Italy, It’s In The Air

At least eight cities in Italy have traces of psychotropic drugs in the air. The highest levels of marijuana showing up in the winter months.

Levels of other drugs such as nicotine, cocaine, and caffeine were all present in varying degrees as well.

We wonder what they’d find in the air over Paraguay or Mexico, which are the largest producers of marijuana in the world.

9. Growing Cannabis Was Once the Law

Christopher Columbus brought cannabis over in the form of hemp fiber ropes and other materials.

In the early 1600s, it was illegal not to grow cannabis. Jamestown Colony laws required all settlers to grow cannabis crops.

George Washington grew it as his primary crop at Mt. Vernon for fiber and material production.

It remained popular until attitudes changed in the early 1900s. In 1917, the Marijuana Tax Law came into effect making it expensive and eventually illegal to produce, buy or trade marijuana and related products.

10. Bhutan Hogs and Other Livestock Get Stoned

In Bhutan, marijuana is growing wild along the road. In fact, it’s considered more of a hindrance than anything.

Residents there aren’t much for smoking it but they do let their livestock partake.

Stoned and happy hogs get the munchies which makes them sell for a better price or provide more sustenance for the family.

However, it hasn’t always been the easiest or cheapest place to visit with a $200 minimum expenses each day. They also have a history of restricting visitor visas though have recently expanded to reap the benefits of tourism and bring money into the country.

Wacky Weed Winning Worldwide

Marijuana is being legalized in more countries than ever with researchers expanding their research on its medical benefits.

Governments are also realizing the potential cash grab it can be for them.
