9 Weird Self-Improvement Tips to Inspire You

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The weirdest thing about self-improvement is that it can’t be mastered. The whole point of learning about this practice is to make yourself better, but as soon as you reach what you think is your best self, you realize you have even more learning to do.

That’s also the beauty of it, though. Self-improvement should never end. If it did, it would be a boring, simple process that many of us would have figured out by now!

If you’re just not sure how to take your personal development efforts to the next level, don’t worry. Here are ten amazing, but kind of weird, self-improvement tips.

1. Leave Yourself Love Notes

It makes sense to write love notes for your children or your spouse, or even as encouragement for your coworkers. But, writing one to yourself? This isn’t something most people would think of.

When you write a love note to yourself you’re reminding yourself about your worth and value. Love notes you write today provide the encouragement and stress relief you need tomorrow, even if only for a moment.

They’re a powerful tool that can cheer you up on your worst days and make the best days even better.

2. Write a Letter to Your Future Self

It’s one thing to write something simple on a sticky note or come across a short note you wrote yourself then hid somewhere. It’s a completely different experience to write a letter to your future self – or your past self.

These letters have a much deeper meaning to them. Writing to your future self can be all about encouragement and guidance. It can be about a promise you make to yourself however many years from now to be in a better place.

Or, this can be a reminder of something you’ve recently overcome; a letter you can use for hope when life throws you another curveball.

Writing to your past self is a little different. Such letters are typically about letting go or about forgiveness. They offer the comfort you needed at a certain point in time yet didn’t receive at that moment. They take you back to a painful place in order to help you heal.

This company can help you do similar activities for your past, present, and future self.

3. Own Being Single and Take Yourself on Dates

Sometimes, self-improvement isn’t so much about reaching new heights as it is getting out of a dark place. The weird thing is that when you feel like you need to rely on others, you may just need to be with yourself a little more.

When you take the time to take yourself out on dates and not worry about romance so much, you’re able to truly listen to your heart. This is the most powerful tool in your self-improvement journey, it’s even more powerful than the mind.

Your heart is what leads the course of your life when you know how to let it guide you. The best way to learn this is by understanding how it works and what it really aches for through alone time and building consciousness.

By the way, you don’t have to be single to do this. Tell your partner you’d like to have dinner by yourself this weekend or take yourself to a coffee shop and read a book while they’re busy. The more you work on yourself, the better half of a whole you are when in a relationship.

4. Stay in More Often

Another great self-improvement tip is to stay in. You don’t always have to go out drinking until 2 A.M. – or drink at all. There’s value in curling up with a good book or watching your favorite movie when you need rest rather than social stimulation.

5. Burn a Few Bridges

Speaking of social stimulation, notice the circle you’ve been hanging around. You can’t reach the potential of your own self-improvement if you have negative people weighing you down.

This isn’t to say that you should make toxic relationships go up in flames. However, it’s better to get out of them now than to continue letting bad influences stand in the way of your best self.

6. Work from Home

Maybe you think you need a vacation in order to regroup and refresh your mind. Many people tell themselves a similar story; they live for the weekend or a special holiday as a chance to take care of themselves instead of making it a regular practice.

Here’s an interesting thought: ask if you can work from home once or twice a week instead. This is like a mini-vacation.

It gives you a fresh perspective on the work you do and the company you’re with, without making you feel like you always need an escape. It does wonders for your overall mental health.

7. Do What Scares You the Most

What if you’re the one who’s holding you back?

Your slow self-improvement lately might have nothing to do with toxic relationships or unfulfilling work, but rather, your perspective. One of the most interesting ways to get a fresh outlook on things is to face something that really scares you.

When you realize something you fear in theory is not so scary in reality, you change for all the right reasons. You stop letting fear hold you back from interviewing for that job or talking to that boy/girl, which is pretty powerful.

8. Be Brutally Honest with Yourself

If you realize you’ve been the one in your own way all along, you can’t just brush this under the rug. You have to face it.

Be brutally honest with yourself about the choices you’ve made and the actions you’ve been avoiding. Talk yourself through the dreams you’ve given up on and the things you’ve settled for and the steps you now need to take.

This is anything but easy. But, it’s one of the most important parts of self-improvement.

9. Make Lists

Here’s something that is easy: making lists.

When life really gets you down – or you don’t know how else to improve – write a bunch of lists. Make one for everything you’re thankful for and one for everything you’re good at.

Make another for the things you’re passionate about and the new hobbies you’d like to try. Also, don’t forget to write the areas where you know you could work on and the relationships you’d like to build and be stronger.

Then, take a step back and look at all your lists. Your opportunities for growth will be staring right at you.

Putting Self-Improvement Tips to Use

It’s one thing to read about self-improvement and another to understand what the process is really like. This experience doesn’t look the same for everyone, but it does have a lot of the same basic principles.

Try these self-improvement tips one by one and see what you discover.
