Thanks a Lot, Abstinence Ed: 5 Weird Sexual Health Myths

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Let’s face it: everyone fancies themselves a sexual expert.

You might think that your experience in the bedroom makes you just as qualified as someone with a medical degree. You might even feel like you can educate others about how to have safe sex.

But when was the last time you did a fact check on yourself?

When it comes to what you think you know about safe sex, it’s always good to make sure that you’re in the right.

In this post, we’ll help you to separate sex facts from fiction by dispelling five common rumors.

We’ll also let you know how to have productive conversations surrounding your sex life.

We’ll even tell you how to make sure the sex you’re having isn’t just hot, but also safe.

1. Can You Get Herpes from a Toilet Seat?

Though you might have heard this sex myth in middle school, many people still believe it — or at least, aren’t quite sure whether or not it’s actually true.

So, can you get Herpes from a toilet seat?

In a word: no.

This is because the Herpes virus requires you to have skin-to-skin contact — whether through your mouth, genitals, or a combination of the two. You can also get herpes if the virus enters through a cut or scrape on your skin.

The good news?

The Herpes virus has a very short lifespan once it leaves your body. So, even if a person who has Herpes used the same toilet seat as you did?

The virus will have died before you take a seat.

Just remember that the symptoms of Herpes, like cold sores or genital sores, aren’t always visible. The best way to know whether or not you have it is by getting tested.

2. AIDS and HIV Are the Same Thing

This is one of the most common myths about sex and sexual health. It’s also responsible for increasing the stigma surrounding those living life while HIV positive.

The truth is that AIDS and HIV are not the same thing.

Instead, over time — and when it’s left untreated — HIV becomes AIDS.

Especially in today’s world, it’s entirely possible for HIV to never fully transition into the AIDS virus. With the proper medication, and by keeping a close watch on T cells and other health issues, the vast majority of people living with HIV are able to continue to have a happy and healthy sex life.

If you’re in a negative/positive relationship, it’s important to have serious conversations about prevention strategies and sexual health.

What’s not productive?

Using misinformation to stigmatize and humiliate your HIV positive partner.

3. Too Much Porn Will Give You Erectile Dysfunction

One of the sex facts regarding pornography that may take you by surprise: the average single man watches about 40 minutes of Internet pornography per week.

Especially in recent years, there’s been a lot of cultural conversation surrounding addiction to pornography. Is it real? How much porn is too much porn? And most of all, will watching an excessive amount of pornography affect your sex life?

While most people would agree that pornography puts unrealistic sexual expectations on both men and women, the good news is that it won’t give you erectile dysfunction.

Although, yes, men with ED issues still watch porn, there isn’t any evidence that suggests that ED is caused by an excessive consumption of porn. To learn more about your pornography habits and possible treatments for ED, check out the ED Treatment website.

4. You Can’t Get Pregnant on Your Period

You’ve likely heard this entry on our list of sex myths before.

Many people, both men and women alike, believe that it’s impossible for someone to get pregnant while they’re on their period.

First of all, it’s important to remember that sperm has a lifespan of up to nine days once inside the female body. This means that, even if you weren’t ovulating or if you were on your period when you had unprotected sex, you could still become pregnant.

While, yes, sex facts all point out that it’s fairly rare for a woman to get pregnant while on her period, it can and does happen.

If you’re not ready to get pregnant yet, ditch the rhythm method and instead rely on condoms and other forms of birth control.

5. Condoms Protect against All STDs

Last on our list is one of the most common myths about sex?

The incorrect belief wearing a condom automatically protects you from nearly all STDs.

While wearing protection certainly makes it much less likely that you’ll contract an STD, it’s not a guarantee. In fact, there is no condom in the world — not even expensive lambskin versions — that offer 100% protection from STIs and STDs.

This is especially true since many people don’t use condoms during foreplay. So, if you only wear a condom during penetration, while things are heating up, you’re still vulnerable to getting an STD.

Condoms don’t offer 100% protection against crabs, HPV, Herpes, gonorrhea, and syphilis. The best way to make sure that you and your partner(s) are playing safe is by regularly getting tested.

Also, regularly clean your sex toys to prevent the possibility of spreading an STD.

Separating Sex Facts from Fiction: Wrapping Up

We hope that this post has helped you to brush up on your sex facts — and improve your sexual health as a result.

Of course, more than anything else, it’s important to make regular STD screenings a part of your routine. And always play it safe: until you’re trying to get pregnant, wear a condom.

It’s not worth the risk — or the anxiety.
