You know, the ones when you find out that everyone was dead all along. Or the good twin brother was actually the evil one. 

And, the very best plot twist movies are sure to have you and your friends open-mouthed at how none of you ever saw it coming.

1. The Usual Suspects (1995)

For those of you who have seen it, you’ll know that ‘The Usual Suspects’ is one of the best movies with a twist. 

It all hangs an incredible performance by Kevin Spacey, who presents himself as a low-level crook and the only survivor of a terrible massacre. We’re all taken in as he spins a tale detailing what happened. Until of course, we realize about 10 seconds before the police that he’s actually the infamous kingpin they were looking for. 

2. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Some would say that the twist in ‘The Sixth Sense‘ is more iconic than the movie itself. 

It is fair to say that there’s no need for spoiler alerts since pretty much everyone knows that Bruce Willis was dead all along. But, this is one of those movies with a twist that stands up to repeat viewings, which isn’t always the case. 

3. Shutter Island (2010)

As one of the more recent movies with a twist at the end, ‘Shutter Island’ stars Leonardo DiCaprio as US Marshal Teddy Daniels. He’s trying to track down an escaped mental patient called Rachel who murdered her three children.

Except, Teddy is actually Andrew Laeddis. And he’s not a US marshal, he’s a mental patient. The part about Rachel killing her children is true, but it turns out that Rachel was Andrew’s wife, and he killed her because of what she did. 

4. Memento (2000)

The best movie twists often rely on unreliable protagonists who we instinctively believe. Until we realize that we shouldn’t have. 

You would think then, that a film centered around a man with anterograde amnesia wouldn’t fool us so easily. But, Guy Pearce’s amnesiac Leonard Shelby is so convincing, we believe everything he remembers as fact. Except, the murderer he’s searching for is actually him. He just forgot. 

5. Wild Things (1998)

Not content with just one surprise at the end, ‘Wild Things’ has more twists and turns than your average roller coaster. 

The movie starts with Kevin Bacon as a cop investigating the reported rape of two girls by their teacher. It turns out the girls are lying, then we discover that the girls are actually in league with the accused. Then, to take things to mind-blowing proportions, we learn that the cop and teacher were lovers. 

Yes, it is a little far-fetched, but it’s also one of the best plot twist movies ever.

Some people say we’ve become de-sensitized to movies with twist endings, and that classic reveals like these wouldn’t take in today’s audiences so easily. 

But, it’s all about embracing the story up on the screen and leaving your cynical, suspicious mind at the door. That way, you’ll appreciate these great movies with a twist a lot more.
