Canada has some beautiful large bodies of later water that are perfect for practicing and performing tricks. so desirable in fact, that many Americans are traveling to Canada just to ride their jet skis.

Curious what new tricks you could learn? We’ve got 5 for you!

Safety First on Your Jet Ski

Let’s start with the obvious before we get into the fun stuff. All of the Yamaha dealers in Manitoba or anywhere else you buy will tell you safety first. Sure, tricks are fun, but you want to make sure that you do them in a safe and responsible manner.

You don’t want to risk giving yourself or anyone else one of these weird injuries. Always wear the proper safety gear, like your life jacket and kill switch cable.

1. Bunny Hop

This is an easy to learn and basic trick that you can pick up as a beginner. You’ll want to dip the nose of your ski into the water and then hit the throttle. This will cause your jet ski to “hop” across the water.

The easiest way to accomplish this trick is to stand up and shift your weight forward. Don’t dip the nose more than a foot into the water and make sure to hold on tight or you will throw yourself off.

2. The Foot Drag

As you are cruising along, reach your foot out and dip it into the water. Only try this trick while you are on smoother water, chop and waves will hinder you here.

Once your foot is in the water a bit, you’ll create a wave or splash that will look impressive to people from the beach. Just be careful to not put your foot into the water too far.

You risk leaning or shifting your weight too far and tipping your jet ski.

3. Backflip

Warning, this one can be dangerous if you mess it up! You’ll start by getting the jet ski airborne. Then you’ll use the momentum of your body to pull the jet ski into the trick.

You’ll flip the ski over you and then land back under you. The danger comes in if you don’t complete the flip and the ski lands on you. Remember, they are heavy, and all that weight will land on you, on the water.

4. Barrel Roll

This one is super fun but difficult to master. You can expect to wipe out the first few times you try it. It takes perfect timing, but the idea is to flip the jet ski sideways while moving sideways.

To accomplish this, jerk the handles right and left a couple times. This will give you the right movement.

5. 360

As the name implies, you and the jet ski will spin in a 360-degree circle. It is easier to accomplish if you have a good amount of speed and power built up.

Then you’ll just need to practice your timing to get the spin down.

Get Out there and Practice

Now all you need to do is find the right body of water to get out there and practice your moves. Calmer water is best for most of these moves. Though if you’re looking for some serious air, wakes and waves are the way to go.

No matter what type of riding you’re doing, always make sure to have the proper safety gear. You don’t want to risk have a bad end to your day.

With a bit of practice, you’ll be impressing fellow boaters and beachgoers alike with your jet ski tricks.
