How do you stay warm during the winter? The obvious answer is to turn up the heating.

That explains why so American households spend so much on energy bills. Many of us spend up to 10 percent of our income on energy bills

Heating bills are boring. There are numerous weird and wonderful ways of keeping warm during the winter without turning the heat up.

By discovering our weird ways to keep warm below, you can save on energy bills and stop wasting energy. Let’s go!

1. Keep My Bed Warm for Me

Imagine if you could have a warm bed waiting for you when you get home from a long winters day in the cold. You can!

Just pay your housemate or sibling to get into your bed before your home. Get them to perform a bed dance.

There are plenty of arguments about what the best temperature is for sleeping. But there is nothing worse than arriving home to a chilly bed.

Even if you have to pay someone to wiggle around in your bed for a while, it’s worth it to save yourself the costs of heating your room when you’re away.

2. Hot Water Bottle Between Your Legs

If you’re feeling a chill at home, then you should grab your hot water bottle.

Squeeze it between your legs and warm your body throughout. There are numerous different designs of hot water bottle covers for you to enjoy while you’re warming up.

People switch to hot water bottles because they want to save money on heating bills. However, you need to be careful not to scald yourself when filling up your hot water bottle.

3. Throw Socks in the Microwave

Do you hate cold feet?

Researchers at the University of Otago University say that feet have an important impact on body temperature

Your feet have large surface areas. There is also a special kind of blood vessels which allow the blood to flow through your feet quickly. Therefore, heat can be released easily.

In other words, if you have cold feet, you’ll get a cold body. Therefore, put socks on to keep your feet warm during the winter chill.

Sometimes, ordinary socks won’t do the job. You need to throw your thickest and fluffiest pair of winter socks in the microwave to warm up.

Once you put these bad boys on your feel all toasty inside.

4. Hug Your Computer

Is your laptop too hot for your lap?

If you have an aluminum Macbook, then you might find that it’s hot enough to fry an egg on.

This is usually a sign that your laptop is overworking. However, if you want to get warm, then you’re in luck.

Forget Netflix and chill. Hold your computer tight for some Netflix and not-chilly.

5. Put on Your Beer Blanket

Sometimes, if you’re really cold, it just takes a few drinks to take the chill off.

The Live Science explains that when you drink alcohol, your blood vessels dilate which pumps blood from your core to the periphery. Therefore, you’re not actually increasing the temperature of your body, you’re just moving the heat around.

Whatever your drink of choice, you get merry and keep warm at the same time. This probably isn’t the best choice if you want to warm up in the morning. But it’ll stop your shivering during the evenings.

It’s also important to stay hydrated if you want to regulate the temperature of your body. So make sure you drink plenty of water too.

Remember – drink responsibly!

6. Keep Your Shoes Loose

Did you know that your shoe size could change over time?

You need to make sure you get measured every three years to keep your shoes fitting well.

If your shoes are too tight, then you’ll reduce the amount of blood circulation to your feet.

Even if you stuffed your shoes with thick socks stay warm, you may find that it has the opposite effect.

7. Think of Good Times

We know that the temperature of a room can impact on the emotions and perception of people. However, can our psychological state impact the temperature too?

According to researchers at the University of Southampton in England, thinking about good times can warm you up. Strange, right?

When participants were exposed to cold temperatures while listening to nostalgic songs or telling stories from their lives. It was discovered that participants who recalled memories from good times had a greater capacity to withstand the chill.

8. Dress Your Windows for the Winter

Did you know that 35 percent of heat loss goes through your walls and the gaps between your windows?

You can improve the insulation of your home by dressing up your windows for the winter.

Remove your thin curtains and blinds. Switch them for bulky wooly drapes to keep the heat indoors.

However, remember to open your drapes and curtains during the daytime, the sunlight provides you with free heat.

9. Wear a Hat Indoors

We used to think that most of the heat from your body goes from your head. Even the U.S. Army claimed that “40 to 45 percent of body heat” is lost from the head.

Scientists have debunked this myth!

But that doesn’t mean that wearing a hat indoors will keep your body warm. You lose heat from any surface on your body – which includes the top of your head.

You may look quite silly if you’re always wearing a woolly hat indoors, but you’ll certainly be warm.

10. Put the Ceiling Fan on

People associate putting the ceiling fan on with cooling your home. However, you can also use it to warm the space.

We know that warm air rises up. If you put your fan to go clockwise, you can push the air down to warm you up.
