3. The Average American has 300,000 Items in Their Home

Americans tend to be sentimental about their possessions. And the reasons for their attachments vary.

They may hang on to items become they remind them of past experiences, they connect them to a loved one who has passed, or they make them feel secure and whole. On average, there are 300,000 items in an American home.

4. And a Good Chunk of Those Items Are Toys

American children make up 3.1% of the world’s children and they own about 40% of the toys that are bought and sold globally. Some research says the average 10-year-old child has about 238 toys in their home, but they only play with 12 of them on a daily basis.

5. Living Rooms Have Assigned Seating

On average, an American living room consists of a couch with a matching love seat, and maybe even a recliner or another type of single chair. But according to an Ikea survey from Fast Company, 43% of American households have assigned seating arrangements in their living rooms.

6. And of Course, the TV Is the Centerpiece

The television is the centerpiece in most American living rooms, but you knew that, right? A full 75% of American homes have a television in the living room while 64% have one in their master bedroom.

With that said, the number of homes in the United States without a television has doubled in the past six years.

7. Bathroom Remodels

After the kitchen, the bathroom is the second most favored part of the home for people who are doing renovations. This is especially true for homes with master baths and suites.

The average bathroom remodel costs a homeowner about $10,500.

8. Self-Cleaning Doorknobs

If you have brass doorknobs in your home, you have the luxury of needing to clean a little less! Brass doorknobs are able to disinfect themselves without any work from you.

This is called the oligodynamic effect. The ions in brass are able to kill fungi, spores, viruses, and other germs within about eight hours.

9. Housewarming Parties

More and more Americans are proud to become first-time homeowners, which are traditionally celebrated by throwing a housewarming party. But what you probably didn’t know is that the first housewarming parties were partially about warming the home. Guests would bring firewood and light fires in the home’s fireplace.

If you insulate the pipes in your home, you can reduce the amount of heat you lose as the water moves from the heater to the faucet. You will also end up running less water while waiting for it to heat up.
