A Fish Called Weirdo: The Coolest Saltwater Fish for Your First Aquarium

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Today, fish tanks are found in more than 7.2 million households around the U.S. In fact, Americans seem to have a real “fish fetish” keeping exotic fish as pets and even creating clothing, accessories and weird buildings after these finned friends.

While freshwater tanks are still the most popular option, more and more people are starting to turn their attention to the beautiful fish that live in saltwater tanks. After all, you won’t find these vibrant colors and unique options for freshwater tanks.

If you are interested in saltwater fish and starting your own saltwater tank, then learning about some of the fish options you have can be beneficial. Keep reading to find out about some of the best and most unique saltwater fish you can choose to live in your new tank.

Banggai Cardinalfish

In the wild, you can only find these fish in the waters near Banggai islands, located in Indonesia. While they are on the endangered species list, they are also extremely easy to breed in captivity.

As a tip, avoid buying wild caught banggais (as that’s illegal). However, once you get them in your tank you will see why they are such a great option. Big mouths combined with huge fins and beautiful stripes make them a stand out option for any tank.

Marine Betta

This is a peaceful, yet unique fish. It’s most well-known for being a very hardy fish, with some surviving tank wipe outs resulting from parasite infections. Others have recovered from wounds without suffering a bacterial infection.

The key to keeping a marine betta in your tank is acclimation. They are extremely shy when first introduced and won’t do well with tank mates who are extremely active.

This fish is also large. As a result, they may eat smaller fish in the tank.

Midas Blenny

If you want a fearless, boldly colored fish for your tank, then the Midas Blenny is definitely one you need to look into. Named after King Midas, this fish is gold in color and somewhat affordable.

It’s also a hardy fish, making it a smart option for those new to caring for saltwater tanks.

Zoa Corals

While this isn’t a fish per-say, it’s a great addition to any saltwater tank. zoa corals are hardy, soft coral options that make them a great choice for beginners.

They are offered in a wide array of colors and various color combinations. Other options to consider adding to your tank include the glove polyp corals or star polyp corals, as they have similar requirements to zoa corals.

If you are searching for zoa corals for sale, be sure to find a seller who knows how to properly care for them, as they can give you some pointers.

Choosing Saltwater Fish: The Weirder the Better

As you can see, there are more than a few weird and cool options for you to consider when searching for saltwater fish. Be sure to keep the options here in mind, as they are great selections for any tank.
