Latin Mass Permission Slip from 1985

This was posted two days ago on a Twitter account called Cream City Catholic, a 1985 letter from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee granting someone permission to attend the traditional Latin Mass. It would be interesting to know what the specific conditions were that had to be satisfied before such permission was granted, as stated in the opening paragraph. We should also note the conditions attached, that the letter had to be presented at the chapel to gain admission, and that the permission could not be extended to anyone else (“not able to be extended to other friends or family members.”)

If the current news about events in the Church gets you down, remember that only 34 years ago, during the Papacy of a canonized Saint, it was an official part of ecclesiastical law that a bishop could treat the members of his flock in this fashion. And, since we have just passed the anniversary of the end of Pope Benedict XVI’s reign, let us remember to thank God for the great gift which he gave to the Church by putting an end to this injustice. “What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful.”
