Promising to revert to taking a reverent stance
Receive this dust, these ashes, this death of self
For in the knowledge of God is found lasting wealth
Not for show or to attract comment, or to impress
A stain of resolve confounding this world of excess
“Tell me have you not washed your face?” She said
“There seems to be a dirty mark upon your forehead”
A bemused, concerned, sweet old lady confronted me
No I said, it is the start of Lent, today is Ash Wednesday
This mark reminds me of the shortness of life’s years
It reassures me that Christ died to take away life’s fears
I wear them willingly, hoping they lead me to die to my sin
Leading me towards heaven for the eternity of life to win
