Can a Monarch Drive?
One of the aspects of being part of a royal family that we don’t always think about is the fact that these people are protected beyond belief. While it makes perfect sense for a person in the royal family to have a protective detail to help them avoid being shot or kidnapped when they go out in public, the lives these folks lead don’t have to be boring and overly sheltered in any way. You might not think of the full life these people can lead and wonder if they have any idea of how the rest of the world lives and functions.
If you think of the royal family members in countries like England of not being capable of understanding what the rest of the world experiences and does on a regular basis you might be wrong. For the most part, this royal family tends to take their birth right to live a life of service to others seriously and works to find a variety of ways to show they can help and give back to the people of their country. This includes working as a mechanic during World War II, which is exactly what the current Queen of England did in her youth.
As a part of the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, Queen Elizabeth II served in this position during the last few months of World War II and this is where she found her love for cars. While she served her country and the people who were fighting for freedom by making sure their vehicles were up to par and ready to drive, she gained a strong appreciation for the vehicles she was working on and has since then collected several cars of her own that are kept for her so that she can drive herself around from time to time.
Yes, Queen Elizabeth II, even at her advanced age, has been seen behind the wheel of some of the cars that she owns from time to time. While most of the time she is chauffeured around by a driver that she had at her disposal. Admittedly her favorite vehicle to drive is the durable Range Rover that she keeps, but she’s been seen in a Jaguar as well. Even though she doesn’t drive around as much as you or I would, the Queen does get a chance to enjoy what driving offers and has the ability to find a way to take her mind of the decisions of the day.
To answer our question, and probably what you thought to start with, yes, a monarch can drive themselves around if they want to. You might expect that the Queen would have an escort car and a follow car when she’s on the road, which may be the case, but I’m sure she gets to decide the route and where she wants to go. The only way we could make this a little more fun would be to think of this monarch that has lived for over nine decades just might go rogue and change the plans in the middle of the drive. That would be one crazy story, but one to consider for another day.
