Heat Wave continues to scorch #Europe at 114 degrees

– Heatwaves and scorching weather across Europe have broken all temperature records, as seen in these terrifying NASA weather scans. Heatwave temperatures across Europe have peaked above 104 Fahrenheit (40 Celsius), prompting widespread safety concerns. In France, #temperatures hit a new high on Friday, June 28, peaking at a sweltering 114.6F (45.9C) in the village of Gallargues-le-Montueux. The temperatures broke the previous record of 111F (44.1C)

during a 2003 heatwave that killed thousands. In the aftermath of these heatwaves, US space agency #NASA has announced June 2019 has officially become the hottest month on record in Europe. NASA said: “Europe’s massive heatwave is on its way out and it’s leaving a slew of broken temperature records in its wake. “Many countries were gripped by temperatures above 104 Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) between June 26 and June 30. READ MORE

WEST COAST ALERT: California could see even larger #quake within next week!

(LA Times) – The odds that Southern California will experience another earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater in the next week are now nearly 11%, according to preliminary estimates from seismologists. And the chances that a quake will surpass the 7.1 temblor that struck near #Ridgecrest on Friday night are roughly 8% to 9%, said Caltech seismologist Lucy Jones. “There’s about a 1 in 10 chance that we could have another 7 in this sequence,” she said.

More likely is that the Owens Valley will experience another temblor of #magnitude 6 or greater. The odds of that are slightly greater than 50-50, Jones said. And more quakes of magnitude 5 or greater are a near certainty. “It would be extremely unusual if we didn’t have another 5” over the coming week, Jones said. The 7.1 quake on Friday night was about 8 times larger than the 6.4 quake on Thursday morning, said Robert Graves, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena. READ MORE

(Express) – A 5.0 earthquake struck off the coast of China this evening. A 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook the Bay of Bengal between China and India at 17:08 GMT (11.08pm local time) today. The epicenter had a depth of 12.2 km. The quake was initially mapped at 9.3809 degrees north latitude and 87.1066 degrees east longitude. There have been no reported injuries following the quake which struck off the land. The China

earthquake came after a string of earthquakes rattled California in the last 24 hours. A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit California today, a day after a 6.6 quake struck near Los Angeles. (Express) – Stromboli volcano in Italy has stopped erupting for now – but experts fear the worst is yet to come, with one volcanologist warning about the risk of a devastating tsunami. The eruption of Stromboli, an active volcano near Sicily, has killed one hiker and terrified the small cities built at its feet, like tourist hotspot Ginostra. But Guido Ventura, a volcanologist at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology

(INGV) said Stromboli should not be underestimated, as it could bring even more destruction following Wednesday’s eruption. He told Italian daily Il Messaggero: “What worries the most is not just the fall of incandescent molten lava fragments, but is most of the times the risk of tsunamis. 175,000 acres of farmland in #Tennessee flooded – Cotton and soybean #crops ruined

(SS) – Lush green fields of cotton and soybeans turned into lakes Tuesday as flooding from the overfull Mississippi River covered thousands of acres of farmland in Lauderdale County in west Tennessee. Officials say about 175,000 acres of farmland are now underwater in the worst time of year. County Mayor Maurice Gaines Jr. says early July flooding means farmers won’t be able to replant in time for the fall harvest, ruining countless numbers of crops.

The Mississippi River was cresting at 35 feet (10.7 meters) Tuesday near Ripley. Flood stage is 28 feet (8.5 meters), according to the National Weather Service. “It’s been devastating,” Gaines said Tuesday. “These waters couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. Most of the farmers have all their fields planted.” In February, flooding along the Mississippi, Tennessee and other rivers in the South caused billions of dollars in damage to homes, businesses and farmland. READ MORE

(Watchers) – Record-breaking rainfall hit parts of southern Japan over the past few days, causing deadly mudslides and flooding and forcing authorities to issue evacuation orders to 1.1 million people. Rainfall recorded from Monday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 3 was 554 mm (21.42 inches) in Nichinan city in Miyazaki prefecture. It broke the past all-time three-day record of 457.5 mm (18.01 inches) set on October 30, 2017. During the same period, Kanoya registered 641.5 mm (25.26 inches), breaking the previous three-day record of 510 mm (20.8 inches) set on July 7, 1993. In just 1 hour on July 3, Toshima village registered 77 mm (3.03 inches) of rain, breaking the old July one-hour record of 73.5 mm (2.89 inches) set in 2016. Although evacuation orders were issued for 1.1 million residents in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures on July 3 and 4, only 6,301 people actually took shelter, authorities said. “The figure of 6,300 was … rather small,” Nihon University professor Hiromichi Nakamori said, adding that, “…there could be cases in which going outside is more dangerous, depending on the situation in the neighborhood.” READ MORE
