How The Computer Numerically Controlled Rotary Table Has Made The World A Smaller Place

Although many people will never have heard of a computer numerically controlled (CNC) rotary table; the invention has played a big role in shaping the modern world. Thanks to the equipment, the manufacturing of metal components has become much easier, which has improved processes in many industries.

At its most basic level a rotary table is a device used to clamp workpieces in place so that drills and others shaping tools can be manoeuvred against it to form the desired component. Traditional models were operated manually by the user, who had to both position the workpiece and guide the shaping tool. The advent of the CNC rotary table meant that newer models could be guided automatically in accordance with pre-programmed coordinates. As a result components could suddenly be shaped much more accurately and quicker than previously.

What they are used for

As we have already stated, the CNC rotary table is employed in all manner of manufacturing environments. However, it has perhaps had the biggest impact in the production of vehicles.
The ability to produce components with such excellent precision has meant that planes, boats, automobiles and trains have all become more reliable and safer. The fact that items can be produced in higher quantities has also meant that manufacturing costs have been reduced. As a result consumers and companies have found buying vehicles more affordable than they would otherwise be.

A smaller world

Thanks to being able to secure their fleet at reasonable prices, travel companies can then offer their customers products at affordable levels. Another benefit is that suppliers can transport their items throughout the country and further afield without charging excessive carriage fees. Had the CNC rotary table never been invented then the world today would be a very different place. Only the very wealthy would be able to travel due to the shortage and cost of vehicles. It is also likely that global trade would be greatly affected, with many countries producing goods mainly for internal consumption.
