Ireland’s Brexit Trouble (Video)
It goes without saying that Northern Ireland has a troubled history.
For 30 years loyalists, mainly Protestants, fought to keep Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom while on the opposite side there were republicans, mainly Catholics, who fought for a united Ireland. Nearly 4,000 people lost their lives as a result of this conflict.
In 1998, the Good Friday peace agreement was signed, and the period of time known as “the troubles” came to an end. In Ireland, the border between the north and south became invisible and the military checkpoints so many had grown up with disappeared.
Then, in 2016, the British people shocked the world when they voted in Brexit, calling for a departure from the European Union.
As the United Kingdom and the EU try to figure out how to finalize that separation, what to do with Northern Ireland has become one of the major problems in the deal. Handled incorrectly, the actions taken in the Brexit move could reignite a version of Ireland’s bitter conflict.

That in fact relies on the behaviour of the Southern Irish since there are no plans for a hard border it is they which will decide the outcome, in the same way if all of a sudden the Irish army suddenly shot over the border there would be hostile consiquences. There will only be a hard border if the Southern Irish make it happen by say slave raids, opium trading or in fact the IRA starting up again with Southern Irish support.
