Pressure BioSciences' PCT platform could play key role in improving cancer diagnosis

Pressure BioSciences Inc (OTCMKTS:PBIO) has announced that scientists from Australia’s Centre for the Proteome of Human Cancer (ProCan) have published a recommended proteomic sample preparation protocol built around its Barocycler instrument system, which will help to identify and use new cancer biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The new protocol is called Accelerated Barocycler Lysis and Extraction (ABLE) by the Australian scientists. The ABLE method is based on Pressure Bio’s proprietary pressure cycling technology platform for the rapid breakup of tissue samples and release of the molecules within for analysis.

The ABLE protocol when combined with a mass spectrometric method, boasts the potential to accelerate protein analysis and improve cancer characterization to provide information for diagnosis and treatment.

As a result, ABLE has the potential to help transform the way cancer is diagnosed and treated.

In response to the news, Pressure Bio shares climbed 2% to hit $2.55 in Tuesday’s morning trading session.

“We believe ProCan’s novel ABLE method has the potential to profoundly improve cancer research and discovery, and possibly even cancer diagnostics in the clinical lab,” noted Pressure Bio’s CEO Richard Schumacher in a statement. “Our business strategy is focused on immediately taking full advantage of this important technology and commercialization opportunity.”

Dr Natasha Lucas, senior scientist with ProCan and the author of the first scientific paper about ABLE, was just as bullish on the new scientific advance.

“The ABLE method optimises the conventional Barocycler protocol, allowing for rapid lysis and digestion of tissue samples and cell lines,” Lucas said. “For ProCan, this is a great advancement as we are processing 70,000 tumor samples with known clinical outcomes, in an attempt to provide a treatment decision for individual patients and to potentially discover new drug targets.”

The Australian Cancer Research Center Foundation International Centre for the Proteome of Cancer (ProCan) is located near Sydney, Australia. The goal of ProCan is to transform the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. With the help of specialized equipment, ProCan will analyze over 70,000 cancer samples from all over the world over the next 5-7 years.

Pressure BioSciences, meanwhile, focuses on the development of high pressure-based scientific instruments for biomarker discovery, drug design and development, food science, forensics and counter-bioterror applications.
