Internet of Things unit Weather Telematics tapped for electric vehicle battery management systems

Internet of Things Inc (CVE:ITT) said Tuesday a top auto supplier has tapped its Weather Telematics Inc subsidiary to supply data for the battery management systems of electric vehicles.

The systems, according to Weather Telematics, address the impact of weather on an electric vehicle’s driving range.

When the outside temperature drops to -7°C (20°F) and an electric vehicle’s heat is turned on, the average driving range decreases by 41%, according to Weather Telematics, citing American Automotive Association research. Moreover, when the outside temperature rises to 35°C (95°F) and air conditioning is used, the driving range decreases by 17%.

By integrating Weather Telematics’ data into electric-vehicle software, the expected battery life can be more accurately estimated, according to the company, adding that the risk of miscalculating available battery power and being stranded is reduced.

“By working with our Tier 1 partner, we are helping address consumers’ anxiety about electric vehicle driving range and improve performance in all types of weather conditions,” Weather Telematics CEO Bob Moran said in a statement. “It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to contribute to the development of such an important product for the electric vehicle sector.”

Shares of Internet of Things fetched C$0.03 in Monday’s Canadian trading. They climbed almost US$0.01 to US$0.02 on the OTC Markets.
