PET Peeve: Dog Feces Etiquette

At the risk of being called a dog hater, of which I am not, I am sick of seeing Dog Crap and plastic bags of dog crap on the beach. For some reason many and I say many, because this is a common sight. A little baggie of dog feces (at least this one is knotted) is NOT put into the trash can but gently lies right next to a trash can. Sometimes this little jewel is sitting right on top of a trash can with a top cover.

Why do they do this? Obviously they do not give a S$% or care and that is crap as far as I am concerned.

At first I thought it was me, but another plogger, told me this is his PET Peeve and he sees this in every area that he walks and picks up trash.

That along with almost the same dog leaving almost every morning at the start of my walk… it gets old. There is absolutely no excuse for this. We like many places that have dogs supply to the public containers of plastic bags for dog walkers convenience.

I Just Have to Eco You

• Pet Waste contains bacteria and parasites.
• Dog Crap is a major contributor to water pollution.
• Dog Crap contains fecal coliform bacteria, which can spread diseases like Giardia, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, causing serious illness in humans.
• Dog waste is cited as the 3rd or 4th largest contributor of bacterial pollution in urban watersheds.
• The average dog produces approximately 3/4 pounds of poop every day.
• 1 day’s worth of feces from a single large dog can contain 7.8 million fecal coliform bacteria
• SAToday reported that 40% of dog owners do not pick up their dog’s waste at all.
• 100 dogs can deposit enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay, and all watershed areas within 20 miles of it, to swimming and fishing
• 100 dogs will produce 75 pounds of crap a week. There are at least 100 dogs being walked everyday on the boardwalk at Mission Beach. Each of those dogs get walked so they can poop.

Here are my Dog Feces Etiquette List 

1. Leash dog so can control it and watch it. Exceptions are in a Dog Free Zone.
2. Watch dog carefully
3. Carry 2-3 plastic bags. Dogs do go more than once.
4. After Dog has done their thing, pick it immediately using plastic bag.
5. Tie- Knot bag securely. Open bags attract more flies and vermin.
6. Dispose of bag in TRASHCAN immediately. Do not leave on the side of the path, the beach. Do not Place by the site of the Trashcan. Place it in a TRASH BIN now. If you are going for a walk, back tracking a few steps just adds more exercise into your day.
7. Place bag completely in trash can.
8. Upon return to home, double check you have bags in your supply, so as not to run out.

Just because personally and I would suspect that most most do not like to step in crap, nor do they like to drink it. Be a good neighbor and pick up after your dog.
