Armed men attacked soldiers on patrol in the community of El Naranjo, of the municipality of La Union, which borders Michoacán, leaving six civilians and a military captain dead, said the spokesman for the Guerrero Coordination Group, Roberto Álvarez Heredia.

Police sources reported that at 7:40 Friday morning they received a report that there was an armed confrontation.

Consulted by telephone, Álvarez Heredia explained that the military was conducting a patrol of the community when they came under gunfire by armed civilians. The soldiers repelled the attack but six gunmen, and an army captain were killed in the clash.

A police report indicates that the captain, identified as Juan Manuel, was shot and wounded in the left leg and abdomen, but died when he was transferred to a hospital.
