Laredo Texas: Auto theft ring stopped, shipped vehicles to Mexico to conduct cartel crimes

Laredo police announced Tuesday, with the help of several law enforcement departments including the San Antonio police auto-theft division, they have dismantled an auto-theft ring that would deliver vehicles to a transnational criminal organization to carry out crimes in Mexico.

LPD Chief Claudio Treviño Jr. said the nine-month long investigation yielded 11 arrests. And at least two of those had been previously deported.

Those defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit auto theft and engaging in organized criminal activity. Four individuals remain wanted by law enforcement.

Trevino said the defendants would use the vehicles to carry out criminal activity in Laredo, including human and drug smuggling.

Participating agencies included the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations and Texas Department of Public Safety.

LPD dubbed the investigation Operation Full Throttle.
