“Everything he communicated [to Chapo] about the escape, was by means of codes and signals.”
Óscar Manuel Gómez Núñez, lawyer for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and the designated “brain” of his last escape, was released from jail on bail in a federal court ruling.
The reason bail was granted after over three years in prison, is that “escape is not a serious crime”.In Mexico escapes are considered a natural human instinct and not usually punished by law.
According to sources of the National Security Commission, last Friday the litigant left the Federal Prison of the West, in Jalisco, after a court in Toluca, State of Mexico, granted him freedom.

According to the prison authorities, Gómez Núñez accumulated charges, for the crimes of procedural fraud and evasion of inmates, and because none of them merit informal preventive detention, he was granted provisional release.
Gómez Núñez will be obligated to go periodically to report to the court.
After the escape of Guzmán, on July 11, 2015, the attorney was arrested and detained by the Attorney General’s Office and in October of the same year interned in the federal prison of the Altiplano. Altiplano is the same prison from which that Chapo escaped.
LaterGómez Núñez was transferred to the Federal Center for Social Readaptation of Chiapas, in Villa Comaltitlán, and last year to the Cefereso de Occidente, where he exited last weekend.
Former A.G. Arely Gómez indicated the attorney was the person who coordinated the escape of the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, noting he constantly entered the Prison of the Altiplano to receive instructions and to inform Chapo of the advances of the plan.
He was also accused of being responsible for contacting and transmitting orders to all the participants in the escape, among them Rigoberto Martínez Dávalos or Francisco Ramírez León, buyer of the land where the tunnel was built from which “El Chapo” escaped.
The federal authority also accused him of coordinating with Lazaro Araujo Burgos “El Juan”, indicated as being responsible for paying in cash the land surrounding the Altiplano.
Eight people were arrested in connection with the escape, among them the brother-in-law of the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, as well as 12 elements of the Federal Police, two of which already obtained their freedom.
One of those prosecuted for the escape, José Daniel Aurioles Tavares, head of the Department of Counterintelligence at the Center for Investigation and National Security (CISEN), declared that Gómez Núñez was the right hand of “El Chapo” because he was “the one who I took to him and brought messages and everything he communicated about the escape, said was by means of codes and signals “.
