Los Angeles, Ca: A network of drug dealers in Southern California who shipped drugs to Hawaii hidden in Aztec calendars and effigies was dismantled today. Eight residents of Southern California were arrested today by authorities while another was already in jail, accused of sending about 90 pounds of methamphetamine in the replicas of old figures.

According to the Central District Attorney’s Office of California, the arrests correspond to seven charges made on October 10, against defendants accused of “conspiring to distribute methamphetamines.”  The indictment includes an attempt to board 11.7 kilos of pure methamphetamine on July 17 through a Postal Service office in Garden Grove, southeast of Los Angeles, California.

Those that seemed to be decorative replicas of the famous Aztec calendar and effigies of this culture were stuffed with drugs, according to the authorities who managed to seize three shipments.

Among the members of the network are Felix Salgado, 28, a resident of Perris, accused of obtaining the drug, and Germán Bastidas Núñez, alias “Check”, 46, resident of Moreno Valley, accused of providing narcotics to Salgado and who was already in custody.

Vaimanino Lee Pomele, 49, a resident of Garden Grove, was also arrested on charges of “orchestrating drug shipments to Hawaii.”  Fernando Caballero Rascón, 42, of Garden Grove, and Moisés Rey Aviña, 39, who lives in Santa Ana, were also arrested and accused of buying methamphetamine for Pomele.

Other members of the drug trafficking network captured today are Stephen Dgewell Martin , 30, of Anaheim ; James Arnold Borbon , alias “Dino,” 58, of Garden Grove ; Gary Wayne Minter , 55, of Victorville ; and Alejandra Pomele , 44, wife of Vaimanino and also of Garden Grove .

If found guilty, each defendant could face a minimum mandatory sentence of at least five years in federal prison and potentially be sentenced to decades in prison.
