Los Tucanes de Tijuana banned in Mexico, will play center stage at Coachella

The Narco Corrido band Los Tucanes de Tijuana was banned in Mexico a decade ago, but will be the first band of its type to take center stage at Coachella music festival which begins on Friday.

The band has been banned since 2008—The ban came after an onstage shoutout sent to a capo. Insane, since narco corridos play openly in Mexico and have not had difficulties selling their recordings. At the time the police chief, Julian Leyzaola, was incensed that the group gave the shout out and banned the group from playing in their hometown and the state of Baja California.

Leyzaola then moved to Juarez to continue his work, and barely survived an assassination attempt that rendered him non-ambulatory destined to spend his life in a wheelchair.

This was the statement from the government at the time of the ban:

“In a time of great violence in this city, where two drug traffickers were the protagonists of the violence, in a presentation of the group Tucanes in 2008 they sent greetings publicly. If they do not change their genre of songs they will not be allowed to sing in this city, “said Luévano Ruiz.
