Tabasco: Journalist Norma Sarabia Killed

In Mexico, six journalists have been killed so far in 2019. The reporter Norma Sarabia has died Tuesday after being shot at the door of his house in Huimanguillo, in the State of Tabasco (southern Mexico). The correspondent at the newspaper Tabasco Hoy for more than 15 years was attacked by two armed men who fired from a motorcycle, according to the newspaper she worked at.

Violence against the press does not stop in Mexico. As of this Tuesday six journalists have been killed during 2019, a figure similar to that of recent years.

The locality, located on the border with the State of Veracruz, has suffered for some time from the increase in violence. On Monday, a union leader was killed in this municipality of some 180,000 inhabitants, located about 70 kilometers from the state capital.The local police have cordoned off the area near Sarabia’s home and the Attorney General’s Office has been moved to the scene to investigate what happened.

The Tabasco Association of Journalists has condemned the murder through Twitter. So has the editorial director of Tabasco Hoy: “We deeply regret her death and we sympathize with her family,” he assured.

During the six years that ex-president Enrique Peña Nieto was in power, 47 reporters were murdered and Mexico became the most dangerous country to practice journalism. In the first six months of López Obrador’s term, little seems to be changed as the trend remains the same.
