WELLFLEET– 092711– Rescuers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare head out to examine a dead minke whale that was in the Herring River area. Cape Cod Times/Merrily Cassidy
Staff from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) are planning to examine a dead minke whale in the Herring River area of Wellfleet this afternoon, according to IFAW stranding coordinator Brian Sharp, who said the animal is believed to be about 16-feet long.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’ website, “the minke whale is the smallest baleen whale in North American waters,” and can reach lengths of 35 feet.
