Dead Humpback Whale left on Monkey Island, New Zealand

DYING: A stranded humpback whale struggles to lift its tail in the surf on a beach at Monkey Island near Orepuki in Southland on Saturday.
Leaving the dead humpback whale that beached at Monkey Island on Saturday was the most sensible option, Department of Conservation staff decided yesterday.
Area manager Dave Taylor said the whale – which was shot by DOC staff on Saturday night after it was determined the whale was sick, suffering and would not survive flotation – would not be easy to move and would not be harmful where it was.
“It has already settled deeper into the sand; it is a reasonable distance from the public.”
The whale was about 1.2km from the popular Monkey Island picnic spot, outside Orepuki.
“We would be struggling to find a more sensible option.”
Mr Taylor said the carcass could take weeks, maybe months to decay, but there was also the possibility of a storm shifting it out to sea. …
