Colonel David Riggins Was Kavanaughed; How He Fought Back

A story from last year deserves another look in light of the travesty no-holds-barred Democrats have made of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation. In 2013, highly decorated Army Colonel David Riggins was about to be promoted to Brigadier General when a woman accused him of raping her at West Point in 1986.

As you would expect regarding sexual abuse in the distant past, an investigation failed to either prove or disprove the allegation. But the accusation alone was enough to scuttle Riggins’s promotion, as Democrats clearly hope will be the case with Kavanaugh’s promotion to the Supreme Court.

But then last year,

Riggins sued [accuser Susan] Shannon for defamation, claiming that every aspect of her rape claim on the West Point campus was “provably false,” and that she wrote two blog posts and a Facebook post “to intentionally derail [his] promotion” to brigadier general. During a six-day trial that ended Aug. 1, a jury in Fairfax County, Va., heard from both Riggins and Shannon at length. And after 2½ hours of deliberation, they sided emphatically with Riggins, awarding him $8.4 million in damages, an extraordinary amount for a defamation case between two private citizens. The jury ordered Shannon to pay $3.4 million in compensatory damages for injury to his reputation and lost wages, and $5 million in punitive damages, “to make sure nothing like this will ever happen again,” according to one of the jurors.

The damages awarded must not have been enough, because something like this apparently has happened again, involving bigger stakes and a relatively trivial allegation from even farther in the past.

The jury consisted of four women and three men. This was before #MeToo mania degenerated into a second Reign of Terror. But like the original Reign of Terror, the #MeToo feeding frenzy will eventually end. When society sobers up, Christine Blasey Ford might be needing the money moonbats are pouring into GoFundMe.
