Who Needs a Gun When You Have a Hockey Puck?

A good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun. Moonbats counter that a good guy with a hockey puck stops a bad guy with a gun. At least, that’s the theory at Michigan’s Oakland University:

The idea of using the quirky self-defense tool grew out of a training session Police Chief Mark Gordon led in March for faculty members on what they should do if a gunman enters their classroom.

Gordon’s bright idea, inspired by having been hit in the head with a hockey puck while coaching (which apparently caused brain damage), was to throw a hockey puck at the shooter.

“It was just kind of a spur-of-the-moment idea that seemed to have some merit to it and it kind of caught on,” Gordon said.

Truly stupid ideas tend to do that in the college environment.

Following up on the suggestion, Tom Discenna, a professor of communication and president of the faculty union, spearheaded an effort by the union to purchase 2,500, 94-cent hockey pucks — 800 for union members and another 1,700 for students.

Maybe it would help to also distribute hockey sticks, so that the pucks could be propelled with more force.

The pucks have a number you can call to donate money to put locks on classroom doors. Whether this raises enough money to pay for the pucks is doubtful.

“It’s just the idea of having something, a reminder that you’re not powerless and you’re not helpless in the classroom,” Discenna said.

If all you have is a hockey puck and the other guy has a gun, you are awfully close to helpless. This approach to security is conceivable only in a nation of victims.

Fortunately, school shootings do not happen very often, despite the impression created by media hype. The hockey puck farce was inspired by the Virginia Tech shootings, which happened more than a decade ago.

The [hockey puck] move comes even as, per state law, Michigan colleges may opt-in to allow students to carry personal firearms on campus, provided they are legally owned with permits. The law was pioneered by campus gun advocates who believe that allowing law-abiding students to be armed on campus is the best way to deter potential school shooters.

Hockey pucks are a gesture. Responsible armed citizens are a solution.
